Anathema's Casket

Anathema's Casket was crafted by Friar Belfstian and buried deep in a wooded ground somewhere in Northeast Hangra.

Summary

A chest containing tattered spellbooks, potions of old, wizarding charms, voodoo dolls, and the like, Anathema's Casket is long lost and thankfully so.   Legend says that, if found and unlocked, the evil spirits who have been trapped inside the cursed items for years will rejoice with gladness and immediately possess whomever they see first, causing the person to become a ruthless and uncontrollable demon who will roam the earth, doing the devil's bidding until their dying day; when they join him in his hellish home.

Historical Basis

Long ago, an evil like no other spread over Northeast Hangra. Most of the clergy were too afraid to venture out into the cursed village. They even locked themselves inside the church of Hangra and prayed for days at a time. One man decided he would not be afraid; that he would actually do something about the possessed people. This man was Friar Belfstian. The Friar took up his bible and headed into the demon-filled city. With The Shining Lord by his side and God's Word in his heart, he followed The Holy Spirit's guidance from house to house, gathering crowds in the street, blessing the heads of the cursed, anointing them with oil and holy water. He rebuked the evil spirits, and he called everyone to repent and turn from their wicked ways. Many of the people were surprisingly receptive. They felt trapped for a long while and were happy to be freed from their curses. They offered to pay him, but he did not accept any monetary rewards. Instead, he encouraged them to give up their charms, spell books, and other such sorcerous items. They obliged, and he locked them all away in a dark chest; Anathema's Casket. As the village thanked him and praised God for their newfound freedom, the prophet wandered off into the forest and buried the cursed box deep in the ground, “closest to where it belonged”. He didn’t destroy or burn any of the objects because he feared in doing so he would upset the spirits. He decided to leave them well enough alone and just give the items back to hell. He didn’t want to take a chance on releasing them into the earth. He considered them to be bound inside the gris-gris and causing any physical damage to anything might loose the bind.

Spread

The people of the cursed villages were overjoyed with gladness, proclaiming the message of what God had done through Friar Belfstian far and wide. This rapid spreading of news resulted in many variations of the story.

Variations & Mutation

Some people believe that a large and powerful dragon-like demon named Anathema rose up to stop Friar Belfstian from freeing the people, and the Friar slew the beast, ensnaring her spirit in the box.

Cultural Reception

Most people rejoice in the heroic tale of Friar Belfstian. Some have created a superstition about digging in the forest because they would not like to accidentally unearth and free the demons trapped inside the chest. But some wish to find Anathema's Casket in hopes that it will bring them riches and power.
