Pershlinka Scrimble Species in Starkeeper | World Anvil

Pershlinka Scrimble

The Pershlinka Scrimble, commonly known as the "Scrimble", are an intelligent species in the Starweb.

Homeworld

The Scrimble home planet is located at what was once the borders of the Columbian Federation during the Second Interstellar Period. Following discovery, Federation forces occupied the planet to deny it to their enemies, and began subjecting its inhabitants to human imperialism.

Biology

The Scrimble have long, thin arms and short legs, giving them a gorilla-like stance when they walk. An amphibian-like skin, turreted eyes extending above the head, and a large dewlap sac below the mouth causes many humans to compare them to Terran frogs. The average Scrimble stands about four feet tall when walking, and is adept at running and swimming.

History

Before first contact the Scrimble lived in a prehistoric state, as wandering bands of hunter-gatherers or semi-nomadic villagers. The arrival of humans brought advanced technology, but also imperialism as natives were forced to adopt Federation language and customs to receive it, and work as labor in resource extraction. The Federation's enemies, seeing an opening, supplied Scrimble partisans with high-tech weapons, hoping to draw the Federation into a quagmire on the planet. The result was decades of violence, including several atrocities committed by Federation forces against Scrimble civilians.
A series of orbital bombardments during the Final Wars brought mass death, but destroyed the imperialist presence. The planet was left free during the Interstellar Dark Ages, with only occasional visits by traders and other voyagers. With the Unified Era, alien influence has returned, though on a far more equitable level. Still, the cultural effects of imperialism upon the Scrimble remain.
