General Purpose

Smart drones can be used to support any operation thanks to their high-level generic intelligence, comparable to that of a human pre-teen.

Their skill level can be increased to expert by installing a specific-purpose program, the same way as with a dumb drone. At that point, a smart drones becomes the equivalent of a skilled specialized human operator.

And yes! Smart drones can be installed with personality mods!

Mods

Smart drones versatility can be augmented with program extensions called "personality mods".

Personality mods can be anything from a super-specialization in a particular field, to a full-on emotional neural network upgrade. The mod works in parallel with the base program and extrapolates a behavior within the parameters of the base program and whichever specific program installed.

The advantage of mods is a fully self-aware drone that can think and interact with humans colloquially and through emotions, and that shows emergent creativity.

The disadvantage of mods is a self-aware drone that might become snappy, unhappy, bored, over-excited, scared, and all sort of moods that will require asset rotation. A fleet of modded drones requires more "maintanance".
