Craft a bright new world, in Ayun Sovos!

Battle at Quacking Pond

The battle raged on, and folks from all across the land gathered to bear witness.
— Words spoken over pie
The Battle at Quacking Pond was one of the most intense conflicts to ever transpire across the lands of Brightfield!

Peace at the Pond

For years, the folks at Lilipond Acres lived in joyous peace, with uneventful days and calm, cozy nights. Nana Liliwen and her army of grand-ducklings lived and played together at the cottage, sharing giggles and sweet treats left and right, with not a care in the world.
One day, there came a knock at the door which would change everything.

Culinary Rivalry

KNOCK, KNOCK, LILIWEN!

No one at Lilipond Acres expected to be standing face-to-face with an ornery family matriarch that day, but the Medell family had a bone to pick with Nana Liliwen! Stomping onto Liliwen's front steps, this disgruntled neighbor demanded that she take her family on and settle a long-standing rivalry brewing in the farmlands of Brightfield!
You see, rumors flew left and right of the incredible Anseni Pumpkin Pie recipe which Nana Liliwen was best known for; coincidentally, the Medell family had a pie recipe of their own, passed through generations, they knew couldn't be beaten. With word on the trails claiming that Liliwen's recipe was the superior pick, this family wasn't going to just take that lying down. There was no way this recipe could even come close to rivaling their historic family recipe! They were issuing the challenge, and Liliwen wasn't about to turn down the challenge.

Delicious Battlefield

Offering her own kitchen as the battlefield of choice, some accusations flew of Liliwen claiming a home-field advantage, but the opposing family head quelled those notions quickly. There was nothing to worry about; if their recipe stood up to Liliwen's, the theater of battle would make no difference to the end result. Madame Medell accepted the terms, and thus began the bake-off of the century!
The wave of pumpkin spice scent which blew across the land that day drew spectators from all across Brightfield; one could have guessed that the entire population of the region had arrived at Lilipond Acres in one grand commotion to see the grand battle unfold. Cheers flew back and forth through the crowd as spectators shouted their support of either side of the conflict. None of them had ever seen such an intense bake-off!
"Nana, why did you accept the challenge? You don't have to prove yourself to them!"
"There's nothing like a culinary battle to make an old lady feel young again!"
— Liliwen's flame reignited

An Impossible Challenge

After a full afternoon of furious baking, the two families met the early evening with tables stacked high with incredible pies. The stacks you're imagining? Think even higher. Maybe even a little higher than that.
The taste testers stood before the tables, beads of sweat dripping down their foreheads. Not only was the wall of pie immense, but so many variations of each pie were produced — how would they keep track of them all? Could they really taste every single one, and still provide a true judgement? This wasn't exactly what they imagined they were signing up for when this all began.
Nevertheless, the judges bravely set forth to complete their task. Bite after bite, however, the judges found themselves less able to focus on their duties, falling prey to a whimsical aura of delight, giddiness, and mischief. Two of them locked eyes for a moment. Then locked eyes with another, and another. Smiles crept across their faces as they dropped their utterly professional demeanors and began grabbing fistfuls of pumpkin pie, and did the unthinkable.

SPLAT!

The first impact was met with shock from the crowd. The second drew a second appalled gasp. The third, now that one was kind of funny! Before long, the taste-testers made an announcement to the whole crowd:

FOOD FIGHT!

Flying Pies

What began as a dignified contest of the culinary arts quickly devolved into a community-wide food fight, as globs and chunks of delicious, delicious pie flew through the air. Many of these flying pie bits found eager mouths, snatched directly from the air by hand or maw — any leftover would carry on to the next target.
By the end of it all, there stood the warring families before their well-fed community, with no true winner being declared.
I think we all win when we can look at all of our neighbors, knowing we get to send them home well fed!
— Nana Liliwen, looking on the bright side

This isn't over!

What should have been a one-off competition to prove pumpkin pie supremacy ended up kicking off something far greater — the Medell family makes its return every single year, like clockwork, to initiate yet another bake-off, to prove once and for all who the region's greatest pie-makers are.
Then, without fail, the bake-off draws to a close exactly like the first of its kind. Likewise, without fail, the family returns again the following year to seek a different outcome from the annual Lilipond Bake-Off.

Hi there!   Fate has brought me to this article, and I'm featuring you as part of my 2025 Summer Camp Reading Challenge.   This article gave me so much joy. It truly exemplifies your skill as a worldbuilder that you've taken a prompt that usually evokes tragedy and death, and turned it into a fun and whimsical piece of cosy lore instead!   A bake off and a food fight? It's a quirky combo which captures the themes of your world so well, and I can't wait to explore the rest of Ayun Sovos.   I can totally see your world working as a cosy RPG setting if that is a path that interests you, but as a piece of worldbuilding this was such a fun read. Thank you.

Best wishes
