Chapter IV: Baleful Screaming
Relics of Ochrid
General Summary
The spirits of the slaughtered people were strewn across the floor, there was no choice but to step upon their corpses, defiling the dead. Baleful screaming was heard from all around as spirits erupted from the Ethereal Plane and into the Material. Coalescing their hatred and anger into an being of undeath, the spirits spring forward and strike at the adventurers.
The fight was long and arduous with death nearly coming to all of the adventurers. With its necrotic blasts and shrieks of death, the being almost overpowered Adriak, Juniper, and Zal. After a screech left the cervitaur and goliath unconscious, June was able to deal a finishing blow with his powerful axe, dispersing the spirits back into the ethereal.
June ran to Zal, using his knowledge of first aid to stabilize the warlock not knowing that Adriak was but mere moments away from death. A glint of light came from the heavens and breathed light into the cervitaur, helping awaken Adriak. Though the party was alive, they found themselves trapped in the chamber. While June rummaged through the bodies and Adriak took a moment to heal himself with his divine power, Zal took a moment to commune The Four Guardians. Much to his surprise... They answered.
Erupting from a sigil of Seiryū, the Dragon of the East themself appeared before the adventurers. Pleading to allow these spirits to rest and help the The Forestmaw Rider's lost love, Helga, finally know peace, Zal spoke with the dragon guardian. Heading the goliath's words, Seiryū agreed to help put these souls to rest allowing the Spiritguard to live up to his title. The dragon awarded Zal with the Ashes of Seiryū and beckoned the souls to climb onto his back.
Approaching June, Helga held out a bottle of perfume that she had worn in life with the intent of it being given to the Forestmaw Rider to let him know the dead of her rest had been completed. She joined the other spirits on the back of Seiryū as the dragon broke through the barrier and returned to the Ethereal Plane.
Emerging from the Mausoleum, the adventurers returned to the inn where they divvied up the coins and loot found and inspecting a rare magical item that Zal revealed to be a Javelin of Lightning. Exchanging a few words, June soon saw blood trickling from Adriak's nose as the cervitaur experienced a painful migraine as words were spoken to him from an unknown source. Deflecting all mention of his discomfort, Adriak excused himself and retired for the evening, shackling himself to his bed as to not have a repeat of the previous night.
