Tiefling Species in Oryth | World Anvil

Tiefling

The life of a tiefling is one of violence, insults, and mistrust. Looking upon the devilkin arouses many emotions of fear and hate for they are infused with the power of Asmodeus from a pact made eons ago. Though their nature and appearance are not their faults, they will forever be held accountable for the actions of their forefathers.

Infernal Legacy

Due to their devilish bloodline, all tieflings have some manner of arcane energies that originate from the Nine Hells. They can call upon this energy in the form of Thaumaturgy, the ability to shroud their surroundings in supernatural darkness, and even the infamous Hellish Rebuke. Due to this power the Tok Empire has not only affixed any Tieflings on their territories with Pacification Bracers, but have enslaved the vast majority of those with the fiendish blood.

Masters of Flesh

Due to their exotic appearance and general attitude from the Tokian people, many look down on tieflings as lesser people and do not grant them benefit from many of the rights of their culture. Due to this many are sold into slavery and trained at a young age to learn the arts of the flesh to make the perfect concubines for their masters' pleasure. However, this also creates a sense of false security and many tieflings are raised and trained as assassins, allowing them to infiltrate and drop the securities of high-ranking officials making it easy for them to strike an unsuspecting killing blow.

Musing Mistrust

Due to the prejudice and stigma of having the blood of a devil, there is a large degree of mistrust toward tieflings. Shopkeepers tend to keep an extra eye on their wares, mothers may shield their young from their presence, or town guards might follow them for an uncomfortable amount of time. Though being a tiefling holds no inherent effect on their personalities, how a person reacts to a lifetime of this kind of behavior shapes a person in individual ways. Some choose to fight against the stereotype and take on respectable roles in their communities, while others might choose to live up to their monstrous expectations. Either way, the tiefling learns how to react to this kind of treatment and often develops skills of charm... Or intimidation.

Feral Ferocity

There are some tieflings born that are of purer blood than their kin. These tieflings tend to be far more animalistic in nature and are prone to the attitudes that the stereotypes embody from. They are hellish creatures and things of nightmares with forked tongues, vicious claws, and leathery bat-like wings stemming from their backs. Their infernal arcane abilities reflect this as well and show an affinity for fire magicks, even having the ability to evocate sheets of razor-thin fire and conjure weaponry of hellish flames.

Lords of the Nine Hells

Though most tieflings bear the bloodline of Asmodeus, there are many of the Lords of Hells who have created their own offspring and subsequent descendants. Every bloodline carries its own boons and unique features depending on the layer of hell that they dominate. The array of different abilities varies greatly from lord-to-lord from mind-controlling prowess to illusionary spells to telekinesis to even the unexpected chilling powers of ice.
