Dragonborn Species in Oryth | World Anvil

Dragonborn

As one would guess from their namesake, the Dragonborn are the descends of dragons and walk proudly among the world though are greeted with apprehension. The Dragonborn were shaped and created by the draconic pantheon and the first of the kin hatched from eggs as a different race altogether combining the best attributes of dragon and man. Some are still faithful servants of their dragon ancestors, but more so are people that wish to walk the world and create their own paths in life.

Proud Dragon Kin

Dragonborn appear as dragons standing upright and erect like many of the other humanoids of Oryth, but most lack wings or a tail. Through years of interbreeding, they have further separated themselves from their dragon ancestors. Dragonborn once were as vibrate as the dragons they emulate.

Tale of Tails

Over the many millennia of interspecies relationships between dragon, half-dragon, and man the draconic blood has diluted immensely. There is a sub-class system inside of Dragonborn society of those with and without tails. Those with tails are considered purer of blood and often regarded as noble to their kin. It is not uncommon for those with tails to look down upon others lacking them and often creates animosity between the two. There are incredibly rare occasions where a Dragonborn can actually be born with wings in addition to tails and often seen as heir-apparent and are requested to take a position of leadership.

They are now more dulled grays with hues of the colors they represent. Their blood of a specific dragon type runs through a clan's veins and show stronger potency than some. The color isn't everything though, as the interchanging ancestor has led to a hybrid of these many genes. Where once a red dragon always shot breaths of fire, it is not uncommon to see one with acid or lightning and any combination thereof.

Metallic

Born of metallic scales, the Brass, Bronze, Copper, Gold, and Silver Dragonborn often stay in clans together. Though they hold no ill-will to their chromatic brethren, there is a hereditary hesitation between the two that causes them to be wary of each other. In ancient times, the metallic dragons were considered the Dragons of Good, helping the ancient tribes of man prosper and gifting them with magical knowledge and agricultural awareness.

Chromatic

Born of chromatic scales, the Black, Blue, Green, Red, and White Dragonborn stay separate from their metallic kin in much smaller clutches. Evolving from solitary creatures said to be the Dragons of Evil, they often have a stereotypical expectation thrust upon them. There is often mistrust and weariness from other races and even clans due to their draconic heritage and the actions of their ancestors dating back from the Draconic Wars far before recorded history.

Self-Sufficient Clans

A dragonborn's clan is in their every action and they would do anything to keep the sanctity and honor of their clan alive. There is nothing more important in a dragonborn's life than their clan and this is true to even that of the rest of the world or even the gods themselves. There is little they wouldn't do for one another.

Dragonborn Names

Dragonborn have personal names given at birth, but they put their clan names first as a mark of honor. A childhood name or nickname is often used among clutchmates as a descriptive term or a term of endearment. The name might recall an event or center on a habit.

Given Names

Unlike many other cultures where the parents are the ones who name the child, the hatchlings are instead named by the clan's elder or elders depending on the size of the clan. No one couple takes care of a singular child in Dragonborn society and is instead mothered and fathered by the entire clan, establishing a strong bond with every member involved.
