Crier

Career

Qualifications

The qualifications of the crier are simple: Be able to reliably repeat news given them at a loud volume. Reading is a plus, but not a necessary requirement. Due to the low amount of education required for this position, many young citizens will be appointed to be the crier. Deviating from the news given is strictly prohibited even should the crier not agree or know of falsity in the article.

Career Progression

Many will use this position as an entry point into a political career. Being able to speak clearly and loudly is a great skill for people of power to possess. However, there are many times when a person will be complacent in their role and keep it for years to come, even into old age.

Payment & Reimbursement

The position of crier pays about 2-5 silver per day of service. This price can vary not only depending on the size and wealth of the city but the expected danger and reciprocation of the audience. In most cities, this position is an entry-level position, but bustling cities can demand more on the defense of the news at hand, often requiring the crier to be trained in defense.

Perception

Purpose

The purpose of the crier to supply their given community with the goings-on of their local territories and the world as a whole. There is often, however, an air of propaganda in certain areas such as Hroff and Tok, where news can get twisted and shaped to aid their ultimate goals and perspectives.

Social Status

Many value the crier as an important staple of their society, however, there are some that ignore or outright berate those spouting the news, especially from those that disagree with what is cried. As such, it is not uncommon for criers to be armed or hire some sort of bodyguard in rougher parts of large cities.

Demographics

There is typically only a need for one crier in the town, but larger cities will often divide the responsibilities up by districts with some having up to a dozen or more criers.

History

The history of the crier goes back far before recorded history to a primal time for the now-sentient humanoids of Oryth. There are many primordial cave paintings depicting a torch-bearer running through their tribes and warning all those who could hear and see them of impending danger. Though the civility and means have greatly changed over the years, the methods of communication remain essentially the same function.

Operations

Tools

The greatest tool of the crier is their voice. The more powerful and booming, the better. Having the ability to read and write to record the notes is a welcomed gift for the crier as well. Many times, in cities of democracy, voting will be the responsibility of the crier, making an inkpen and parchment a must. A crier will also almost always be seen with a bell that they ring fervently to gain the attention of those they wish to proclaim too.

Dangers & Hazards

The biggest danger presented to the criers is the drunk and disorderly or generally anyone who doesn't like the news being proclaimed. Criers can face the unjust wrath of mobs of people in larger cities and can sometimes lose their life simply for being the bearer of bad news. Protection in larger cities is a must, especially in nations like the Tok Empire that are notorious for spreading news that isn't the whole truth or just outright lies and propaganda.
