D'maryp Evna

Dee-Mah-Rip Ee-Vah

First High King D'maryp Adinimus Evna (a.k.a. His Royal Highness)

"Sight is more than seeing with your eyes, it is also seeing with your mind.
To see with your heart, however, is truly a gift..."
— D'maryp Evna, First High King of Tok

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

When D'maryp was in his prime, he was the epitome of physical prowess; Athletic, strong, and resilient. He was a beautiful man that was swooned over by many men and maidens alike. However, in his undeath, he has grown sluggish, his dried muscular feature tightening with every movement. His face deformed and pieces of skin absent or falling off, he is no longer a sight to behold, but one to fear.

Body Features

Skin unmarred and free of piercings or ink, his naturally tanned skin complimented the contours of his chiseled body when he still drew breath. The punishment of time is not a kind one and especially not to those cursed of eternal undead torment. Though the magical affliction has halted much of the decaying process, his body is no longer the temple he once saw it as. His right arm has completely lost its skin and muscle, his facial hair has all but fallen, his teeth now jagged and pointed, much of his mouth no longer remains, his hair clumped and unkempt, and his skin a sickly green.

Facial Features

D'maryp glinting smile was always a welcoming sight to those meeting him and his well-presented expressions always left them with a good impression. Now, it is quite the opposite, horrifying any that come in contact with the slow-decay of the zombified remains.

Identifying Characteristics

High King Evna was born with piercing blue eyes that penetrated the very soul of those he spoke with, however, around the age of 13, his sight began to wain. His eyes glazed over with milky-white and soon was completely blind at the age of 20. The very best of healers tried to heal the affliction with divine magics, but all attempts proved unsuccessful.

Physical Quirks

Due to his blindness, D'maryp eyes generally wander past the person he speaks with his eyes pointing toward the person to better hear them. Despite his disability, however, he always stands proud and respectful, even to those who would consider him an enemy.

The Retorter

Also known as The Retorter. In the world of Oryth, only nine of these blades are known to exist. Each is patterned after the legendary sword Fragarach, which is variously translated as “Final Word.” Each of the nine swords has its own name and alignment, and each bears a different gem in its pommel.

D'maryp gained a +3 bonus to attack and damage rolls made with this sword. Also, while he holds the sword, the First High King could use his reaction to make one melee attack with it against any creature in his reach that deals damage to him. He had Advantage on the attack roll, and any damage dealt with this special attack ignored any damage immunity or resistance the target has.

Retorter is the Lawful Good sword and contains an Aquamarine as its gem.

Special Abilities

Growing up an urchin on the streets of a small city, D'maryp learned to be quick on his feet and excelled in sleight of hand. However, as his sight dwindled, he took a more honest approach to things, learning how to leathercraft and apprenticing under local leatherworker. Eventually, he wished to see the world before being completely blind and was guided by visions from Heironeous and became a warrior under his call, imbued with His divine powers. He trained in combat and learned to use his other senses and honed them to perfection, knowing one day his sight would escape him.

Apparel & Accessories

In life, D'maryp wore regal, loose-fitting, royal attire, but not much in the way of jewels or jewelry save his pendant of magical make and his wedding band. In undeath, he wears what he was entombed with which has tattered, stained, and fallen apart over time. His tomb was looted prior to his reawakening, and he lost anything of value including all his jewels, magical items, and the legendary sword, the Retorter.

Specialized Equipment

The most notable of equipment that D'maryp had in his possession in life was the beautifully crafted, golden-etched, magically-intelligent longsword, The Retorter allowing him to answer back any attack made against him with one of his own.

His armor was a masterly crafted and magically imbued Full plate of Invulnerability that allowed him to turn the most grievous of attacks into a mere brush against its hardened plates.

His wedding band was magically infused with the power to shrug off magical effects and attacks. Lastly, his amulet was a holy symbol to his devout worship of the great Heironeous, granting him divine power allowing him to be closer to his god than most other paladins and clerics have the honor of claiming.

Mental Characteristics

Personal History

D'maryp grew up from humble beginnings, orphaned and alone on the streets of Yurlund on the continent of Tok. He was raised in an orphanage that didn't treat the children with much in the way of the goodness of charity and instead forced them to work under the threat of corporal punishment. At the age of 8, D'maryp escaped from the orphanage and survived on the streets through charity and theft. At the age of 13, his vision began to fade.

D'maryp found his way to the local Temple of Heironeous and begged for his blessing and the miracle of the restoration of his sight, but no answer came, though the temple offered him refuge, shelter, and food in exchange for menial labor. On D'maryp's 16th birthday, he received his first vision from the The Valorous Knight who told him he was destined for greatness. When asking why He would restore D'maryp's sight, Heironeous told him that it was pivotal he loses his physical bounds of vision in order to gain a greater understanding of his role to come.

Education

D'maryp received his education from the clerics of Herioneous at the temple. Though they were able to teach the child the Celestial tongue, his education was only basic at best. He learned most of his lesson through hands-on training and experience through life lessons and the proverbial "hard way".

Accomplishments & Achievements

D'maryp's greatest achievement was pushing back the forces of Hextor and uniting the people of Tok under one banner. He is often credited throughout history of being the founding father of the Tok Empire, though when he formed it was instead known as the Kingdom of Tok.

Over the years after the resurgence of Hextor and his evil impression let loose with no Heironeous presence to keep it in balance, history was skewed and much of the iconography of Heironeous was altered to reflect the God of Tyranny instead. He seeks a way to correct these lies and put the Tokian people back onto the path of righteousness and the ways of Heironeous.

Failures & Embarrassments

D'maryp's greatest failure was being unable to foresee his assassination and the embarrassment that followed him after death is being turned into a creature of Undeath, something that he was abhorrently despised off in life. Being cursed to an entity that would never know the peace of death and never know the grace of his god's afterlife is one of the worst punishments he could imagine. He vows one day to escape his tomb and find the one responsible for his curse and destroy him for forsaking him the right of eternal slumber. Though finding that individual thousands of years after will definitely prove to be difficult...

Mental Trauma

Turning undead has horrible mental effects on those afflicted, even more so for those who were devout worships of a divine being. For the first millennia after awakening, he was a merely shambling corpse with no mind or will of his own, trapped to wander his tomb aimlessly. Throughout the years, his intelligence began to return to him as he devoured the flesh and brain matter of those spelunking his ancient chambers. It seemed the more he cannibalized, the more he gained possession of his own facilities. It was an unfortunate trade-off, to be sure, but a necessary one. His perspective on life and creation is still the same, but now he has to live with the actions and consequences of what happens should he lose control and what it takes to keep that control.

Intellectual Characteristics

In his prime, D'maryp excelled at intellectual conversation despite his lack of proper education. His strategic and tactical prowess was unmatched at the time, definitely a trait that was passed down through the bloodline and now resides in his descendant, Adinimus . Unfortunately, undeath was not kind and his intellect is rudimentary at best, unable to even form much in the way of proper sentences in the common tongue.

Morality & Philosophy

D'maryp's morality aligned with Heironeous' path and scripture while he was alive. However, his morality has dwindled throughout the millennia. His actions are now more guided by his need to keep his facilities about him and his lust for revenge. He hopes one day he will finally be put to rest, but wants his country restored to his former glory.

Taboos

His very existence is taboo and many who see him would be considered wise to turn tail and run. Though he doesn't enjoy the prospect of cannibalism, he recognizes its necessity, but prefer to choose his victims as those who make victims of others. He often finds himself preying on scandals, thieves, and bandits as a way of trying to keep the retribution of Heironeous alive.

His conviction and divine spirit is still very much alive, but even those from the church of Heironeous would likely view him as unredeemable and attempt to strike him down for merely continuing his unlife. Though they would likely be biting off more than they were able to chew.

Social Characteristics

Contacts & Relations

As the High King of Tok, D'maryp had all the contacts this title would afford from all over the world of Oryth. However, those contacts are all long dead and their descendants barely would know the name of Evna except by what is taught in Tokian history.

Family Ties

There is only a singular descendant of D'maryp still alive, the current High King Adinimus. The two have never met and don't know of each other's existence. Adinimus has read altered tales of the First High King being a stern king with an iron fist, but much of these tails have been distorted to better suit the Hextorian religious views. With the internal doubts recently cast by the current High King, it is unsure how Adinimus would react to the truth; If it would cause him to disown his ancestor or drive him over the brink of acceptance and seek to right the wrongs of the history of his lands.

The Heironean Code

  • Duty to the People. This duty stresses courage, justice, mercy, valor, protection of the weak, and faithfulness to church superiors of officers of righteous law.
  • Duty to the Arch-paladin. This duty stresses obedience to Heironeous himself, devotion to the church, generosity, championing good against evil, putting the needs of the church and the faith above those of mortals.
  • Duty to a Lady. This duty pertains to the concept of courtly love, devotion to one's beloved, and respect toward all women in general.

Social Aptitude & Mannerisms

D'maryp was always respectful and well-poised even during his time in the orphanage as a child. He usually suffered in secret, crying himself to sleep until he was able to break the shackles of the orphanage and start his new life. He always made sure to show the best etiquette possible and often surprised the clerics and paladins of Heironeous with his astuteness and charitable acts. As a king, this never wavered, often taking his sociability on his various diplomatic missions throughout Oryth. In his undeath, however, much of this changed and all he now cares about is revenge and keeping his mind his own.

Religious Views

Though the current religion of Tok is Hextorian, the true religion of Tok actually began under the purview of Heironeous. Heironeous sees the world as a deadly place, filled with perpetual challenges and trials for those who battle for justice and defend the weak and innocent. His followers should always act with honor and chivalry, and to uphold justice. The danger is to be faced head-on, with calm and resolve. Those who defeat evil are rewarded with Glory, those who uphold the tenets of the Arch-paladin are rewarded with Virtue. The Arch-paladin's teachings have been codified in a chivalric path known as the Heironean Code.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

In life, D'maryp was motivated by the prospect of making the world a better place, and for a while, he believes he truly did. Though over the years, he has learned tales of the proud and righteous kingdom he once knew has turned into an evil and corrupt empire that emerged on the back of his creation. Now in unlife, with Heironeous seemingly abandoning him, his motive has veered more toward survival and preserving nature. His faith and respect for Heironeous are still prevalent, but his new power has been given to him by nature itself, now wanting nothing more than being returned to his grave. The power of decay and rebirth now are beckoned by his call.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

D'maryp was always a great leader and a greater fighter. His prowess with a blade was unmatched and those locked in close-quarters with him would feel the wrath of the knight of Heironeous. His greatest downfall, however, was his inability to see. Though great in melee, ranged fighters would have ease in finding the nooks in his defense. This eventually led to his assassination as a magically imbued bolt from the shadows embedded itself into the base of the First High King's skull.

Likes & Dislikes

In life, D'maryp was a fan of fine wines, good food, and lovely music. In undeath, he finds himself concerned only with satiate his dark hunger and plotting his escape from the Tomb of the Forgotten King in order to make an impact on the blasphemous ways of the new Tok Empire. Though he has only seen recorded documentation and the tales of adventurers lost in his tomb, he is appalled to hear his creation of nobility has turned into the dark cult that it is today.

Virtues & Personality Perks

Honor in combat and chivalry to those in need is the greatest virtue of D'maryp, even in his current state. There is a kindness to his whitened eyes, but also a great sadness and loneliness about him. He tries his best to remain his regal and royal visage, even in undeath, but it is hard to not incite fear and anxiety into those that look upon his gruesome visage.

Vices & Personality Flaws

In life, his greatest vice was the pleasure of the skin. He often bedded multiple partners of the male and female persuasion and it is rumored that this openness led to the vulnerability that eventually caused his death. In undeath, his greatest vice is his eternal hunger for living flesh to satiate the need to remain in control of his facilities.

Personality Quirks

D'maryp has a hard time with troubling news and conveying the correct emotional reactions. He often defaults to his smile, which can sometimes be inappropriate in some situations. He offers comforting words in times of need but tends to get flustered at sad and depressing situations. His personality has changed quite a bit, but even in his undeath, he is a fan of humor to lighten the mood, but sometimes makes jokes about his zombified states and the stereotype involved with it such as a taste for brains.

Personal Hygiene

As an urchin living off of the streets, D'maryp was quite accustomed to rare bathing, but that all changed when he ascended to royalty. His appearance and hygiene were top notch and had several handmaidens to keep him in a very presentable fashion. However, now that his affliction is upon him, the smell that emanates from D'maryp is a foul one. The stench of decay and mildew clings to him like an unpleasant blanket.

Hobbies & Pets

D'maryp's favorite past time is a nice quill to a piece of parchment. He enjoys writing poetry and wordplays, though rarely shares his work. Not out of embarrassment, but more out of not wanting to show off and seek approval. Being High King brought with it affirmation for everything he did, whether it was good or not, so he quickly stopped looking for opinions on his past-time hobby. He did it for no one other them himself. There are collectors around the world, however, who would pay a hefty sum for even a page out of his works which are all buried away in chests and storage containers in the tomb he is currently locked inside. D'maryp rarely had time for much in the way of animal companions aside from his esteemed and loyal warhorse steed, Archibault. His steed is long dead, however, and did not share the same fate of undeath as him, much to D'maryp's comfort. He would never wish this curse on anyone be it man or beast, let alone a dear friend and faithful companion such as Archibault.

Speech

D'maryp spoke with an elegant and finesse about it. His natural charisma carried his words about that gave it a near-celestial feel. His honey words and silver-tongue won many diplomatic debates and created many treaties. However, in his zombified state, he can now barely muster words in Tof'kran Common and his grunts and growls do most of the talking for him.

Wealth & Financial State

D'maryp once new relics and treasure never before seen by many people of all classes all throughout Oryth. Though he gave away much of his wealth when he was king to the less fortunate, there were precious works of art, tapestries, and magical equipment all within his reach. Though he was buried with many precious relics and treasures, they have long been pilfered throughout the millennia. Thankfully, he was left with his most sacred possessions; Ink, quills, and parchment. However, after a few hundred years after his undeath, the ink had all either been used up or evaporated. That does not stop his writing, however, and he now uses the blood of leftover dungeon delvers that must be consumed to keep his mind his own.
