Faralinn Settlement in Istralar | World Anvil

Faralinn

A chance to catch my breath... how long has it been?
— exhausted adventurer
The resort town of Faralinn sits off the coast of Aletheia's south-eastern reaches, well sheltered by the inland sea caused by a meteor-like impact during the First Divine War. The waters surrounding it are warm, the island's beaches are pleasant, and travelling ships have little reason to pass too closely to the sleepy island.   All this has combined to render Faralinn as one of the most praised holiday spots across the empire, contributing to its bustling tourist economy. It does not sit overly far from Syronicea, meaning those with money and time have the option of travelling between the island and city - along with a number of other tourist towns upon the south-eastern coast.   Naturally, with the influx of tourism, Faralinn has seen numerous businesses set up shop -- and over time, the town has transformed from a sleepy village into a bustling holiday town fit with games, activities, shops, and its own set of festivals to complete the holiday feel.   The island has even selected a pair of mascots - two bears - to represent them and encourage children. Local folklore states that Rudi and Rosie, as the bears are known, are fey that see the town as their home, and can offer treats to travellers if an appropriate gift is offered at their shrine.

Tourism

Should we visit the beach, dear? Or perhaps the aquarium? Oh, but I heard they're doing seafloor tours...
— rich tourist
Faralinn may have once been a simple fishing village with nothing but picturesque views and plenty of fish for miles, but the influx of visitors have shaped the town into something different. It has a number of different activities and spots to visit now, each with their own merits.

The Beach

Faralinn's beach, with its white sands and warm waters, is one of the primary reasons for visitors to attend.   The general lack of deadly sea-creatures also helps, though there are still rare incidents.

The Aquarium

An aquarium was constructed near the town's main pier, containing a variety of magical and mundane fauna.   Occasionally, intelligent sea-creatures will visit the aquarium and entertain visitors.

Pleasure Boats

Those wishing to go further out on the waters can hire a pleasure boat to take them for a ride across the seas.   Of course, there are also boats catering to other kinds of pleasure...

Historical Re-enactments

Many historical re-enactors, charmed by the town's near-stasis in time, gather and hold historical re-enactments of key periods in the Empire's history.   Lately, an exhibit on the achievements of Emperor Asterion of Aletheia has been put on in honour of the former Emperor.

Fine Dining

An influx of tourists means an influx of hungry travellers. That, combined with the easy access to fresh seafood & native plants, has spawned a number of quaint dining joints.   The oldest restaurant serves purely fish, chips, and the associated trappings. They regularly win awards.

Forest Walks

The island's forest is not huge, but provides enough space for orchards and festivities. Tourists like to explore it in relative peace.   Guided tours are available to show tourists some of the lesser-seen spots, such as the area of a former Empress's proposal to her wife.

The Pier

The pier extends out towards the mainland, and is the site of many attractions from puppet shows to festival parades to evening fireworks. The town market sits directly adjacent, too, for those wanting to spend money.   Animated versions of the island's mascots, Rudi and Rosie, can be found wandering here.

Undersea Passage

Some tourists are braver than others, and for those, there is an undersea walk. They may travel down past the island's dungeons into a dank sewer that leads out into a stunning water-less pocket of the ocean.   Unfortunately, the ocean can stare back at them, too. This area is regularly patrolled for monsters.

Competitions

The island regularly hosts competitions both on the town pier and in the central square. These can be anything from beauty and talent contests to sandcastle competitions or even displays of magical talent.   Most popular are the sporting competitions involving rowing or swimming, held exclusively during summer.
