Deepsea Sickness

Deepsea Sickness is a noncommunicable disease that is contracted only on the Lost Island or after prolonged exposure to The Artifact. All living creatures can contract it.   As both the Island and the Artifact were lost to the ocean for thousands of years, the magics of deepest water are credited as the source of the condition. The seas of Aufyra are deep, dangerous, uncharted territories.   {PATRON SECRET!} {spoiler}

Transmission & Vectors

The disease can be contracted via direct contact with a tainted object or location, or through the air, if within close enough proximity to it.

Causes

The essence of the deep ocean tainted parts of the Lost Island. The Artifact and the ruins that once contained it have the largest concentrations of toxic magical energy.

Symptoms

Deepsea Sickness causes lethargy, confusion, fevers, chills, extreme weakness, and death.   The victim's body develops painful sores that purple, fish-like scales emerge from. If 50% or more of the body is covered in scales, the victim is likely at the final stages of the Sickness and near death.   Depending on the individual, the Sickness can last months or years before death.

Treatment

Thankfully, while The Artifact itself can be a cause of the disease, its discovery lead to a cure. Capsule Magic medication isolates and contains the disease with a high success rate.

Prognosis

Deepsea Sickness is fatal without treatment.

Sequela

Those that recover from Deepsea Sickness are left with Deepscar.

History

The Years of Exploration on the Lost Island two decades ago lead to the discovery of the disease.

Cultural Reception

As those who contract the disease have likely been to the Lost Island, they are considered adventurers, and are generally held in high regard. Common citizens think of those that contract the disease as injured or fallen heroes. (They would probably think differently if the disease was contagious, but it's not.)
