Sophist of Somae

Historical Overview

Origins

The Sophist is one of the foremost town criers, and later papers, in Somae. In Anhara, news is spready by News-Writers, groups which write the news in daily or twice-daily papers, which are nailed to boards in public locations such as squares. They often employ criers to read them to the masses at intervals, while delivering hand-written copies to the more wealthy for a fee. The Sophist is one such news-writer. It was established to compete with the Collegian Crier, particularly to build support for the inclusion of a Faculty of Philosophy at the Academy Somae.

Bias

The Collegian Crier advocates on behalf of the Academy, and the Student Unions more specifically. It also reports official updates from the Thewisy government.
"Gather round you thinking men, and listen to my news. Idle minds need not attend, for what I say is meant for learned friends, not those whom collegians have disabused!" - Sophist of Somae
This leaves little market for the Sophist, which originally hosted philosophical debates. The Collegian made enemies amongsts the townie representatives, advocating on behalf of the academics. The Sophist eventually had to pick them up, and now runs stories against the Academy every so often. Despite this, they have no interest in adhering to the government's announcements, and has a more investigative bend.
