Eastern Seas Gazetteer

Historical Overview

Founding

The Eastern Seas Gazetteer is the preferred town crier, and later newspaper, for merchants, traders, and insurrers focused on al-Tahat and the East. It began in the Moneychanger, a coffeehouse founded by House Melac, where merchants and moneychangers gathered to organize the growing trade with al-Tahat during the Golden Age of Somae.   The more traders who gathered in the Moneychanger, the more traders were attracted there, for the foremost method of figuring out pirate activity, prices, news from al-Tahat, and the weather was by word of mouth. Eventually, this was formalized into the Eastern Seas Gazetteer.

Circulation

The Gazetteer is a news-writers, an Anharan organization that records the news on a few written notices, distributed at public locations, but always read aloud by a crier. While this began in the Moneychanger, it did not remain there. The Moneychanger itself was absorbed into the Eastmarch Bank & Trust, and the main crier remains in its lobby.   Trade between the Eastmarches and al-Tahat is no longer confined to one location. The Gazetteer has criers in Imgreshold-on-the-Narrows and its vassal ports. Often, given their proximity and connections to al-Tahat by sea, these have more up-to-date news than the capital.
