Bearded Whales

Historical Overview

The Bearded Whale appears first, like almost all other whales, in the journeys of Dennic I Prominere, the legendary founder of House Prominere. The Bearded Whale plays a rather minor role in the tale, as a wise creature passing by Dennic's ship, which gave him advice on where to go. This reflects Prominere knowledge of the creature, which was insignificant as the Bearded Whale was unimportant compared to the Coastal Whale.
After the extinction of the Coastal Whale however, the Bearded Whale takes up the role of the main target of the Promenade's whaling industry. It is the most common, and safest, whale to hunt in lieu of the Coastal Whale. It is targeted by both whaling motherships and whaling colonies across the Unknown Tides and the various seas adjacent to the Boreal North.

Biology

The biology of the Bearded Whale in legend gives the creature its name. It was depicted as stroking a beard of icicles as it consulted Dennic on the route of his journey, with few other defining features. While the beard was a literary addition, the creature does frequent the more frozen waters of the north, far away from the Anharan coast. 
The size, weight, and composition of the creature is so identical to that of the Coastal Whale that it is believed to be the same species, simply scaled up for deep sea living.
