Scout Signs

Invented by so-called Scout or Explorers, but co-opted by soldiers, Scout Signs are a way of communication using large gestures. Most signals can be done with arms, though some alternative forms include the usage of weapons and shields. Sometimes signals are left behind, either drawn or through the positioning of branches and such.   While some signals are used by most, groups tend to develop their own signals for specific circumstances. Usually these can be understood but not always, so confusion is always possible when working with another group. As such, it is always recommended to discuss these signals in advance, so that no fatal confusion can arise.
While there are those that use hand signals instead of large gestures, this is only done in close environments. Some groups have developed a more detailed language for this kind of signing. However, Scout Signs are large with a good reason: They must be immediately recognisable from a distance.

Common signals

Stop/Halt
How: Raised arm with balled fist, weapon held high sideways so balled fist is visible.
Meaning: Immediately halt and stay alert. When left behind as sign, it can suggest the possibility of nearby danger.
Danger
How: An X-shape formed by two arms or weapons in front of a chest, weapon held diagonally in front of a shield.
Meaning: Immediate danger, draw weapons and prepare defenses.
All clear
How: Arm or weapon aimed at the ground on one's side.
Meaning: No threats detected, safe area. When left behind, this indicates a suitable shelter for taking a break.
Look that way
How: Waving an arm or weapon in a direction. Requires two branches when left behind, to indicate waving.
Meaning: Look over there, there's something important you need to see.
Go that way
How: Waving a hand or weapon, by only moving the wrist. Usually done with a single branch, snapped near the top.
Meaning: You should go that way. In combat it is usually an attack direction.
Get Down
How: Lowering and raising a horizontally stretched arm or weapon.
Meaning: Get down, take cover. Indicates either threat or prey that shouldn't be allowed to notice anyone.
