Passing of the Glove Tradition / Ritual in Valley of Plenty | World Anvil

Passing of the Glove

A succession ritual followed by some of the noble families in the kingdom, this ritual likely originated from the valley. During the ritual, the head of a noble family will hand over their right glove, which represents their authority. The heir's acceptance means that from that point forth, the heir will lead the family in their predecessor's stead.   A glove should always be passed in the presence of witnesses, including any former candidates. This lets them swear loyalty to the new family head. Absence is assumed to be with hostile intentions, so not attending is often the precursor of armed conflict.

Ceremony
Both the family head and the heir should wear their best ceremonial outfits, with any and all medals and other symbols of success. Guests should also wear ceremonial outfits, though not necessarily with all medals possible. This includes ceremonial-yet-sealed weaponry.   First, everyone kneels before the family head, who then takes off their glove. The heir rises to their feet and stands still as the family head approaches. The glove is handed over and donned. Next, the family head initiates the mirror-fist salute, with the heir responding.   The salute represents the handing over of the duties, where now the heir will stand tall and lead the family against its foes. After this, the former family head joins all other subjects in kneeling, acknowledging the successor's authority over everyone present.
In Death
In case of death of the current family head, a successor must be decided upon before the funeral. At the funeral, the right glove is placed upon the coffin. After all others are seated, the successor enters and approaches the coffin. They take the glove and don it, then hold their clenched right fist in front of their heart.   This is a wordless version of the final part of the mirror-fist salute. As there is nobody to hand over the watch, there is nobody to express the promise "we still stand" to. Instead, the words are spoken inside the heart of the successor.   After a moment of silence, the successor turns around and faces the guests. While other guests stay seated, all subjects now stand up from their seats before kneeling, as a gesture of loyalty to the new heir.
