Fall of the Valley - OLD

Once there was a valley, blessed with fertile farmlands, mines holding all the ores needed, healthy forests, and rivers filled with fish. The valley's entrances were safeguarded by Forts, and its people lived spread out over several villages, trading with each other so that all had a good life.   Yet in their arrogance, the people of the valley upset a mighty dragon, who decided to teach them a lesson. In the middle of the night, the dragon went to one of the villages and with a great roat it set the entire village on fire, leaving no survivors. The fire spread, forcing the other people of the valley to cut it off. Yet even when they stopped the spreading of the fire, the former village kept burning, as many a year passed.   But the people had not learned their lesson, and the dragon came back to give them another warning. A great roar was heard throughout the valley, and the everlasting fire went out. First, the people thought the dragon had forgiven them. But soon the rivers began to fall dry, and what was once fertile land and rivers full of fish, turned into cracked soil and dry riverbeds.   Still, the people did not learn. A second great roar was heard throughout the valley, and the water returned in great force. It washed away the villages and one of the great valley fortresses, leaving only those alive that did not live near the rivers. The people were afraid, and many fled the valley. Yet others remained, defiant to the end.   As the people fled through the mountain pass, the dragon had pity on them. It waited until they were safe before it roared again, and behind the people rocks sealed off the pass. Then, the dragon went back into the valley, and none of those that remained, ever were heard from again.
