Basin - Scholar Report

The various rivers in the valley combine in a large lake stretching across most of the western exit of the valley. The lake ends in a relatively wide river with significant speed nonetheless, surrounded by large cliff walls. The terrain around the river is nearly entirely impassable, making the water the only proper way to exit or enter the valley on this side.   The original inhabitants of the valley realised this river was both a risk and a blessing. A risk as one swept away would be doomed beyond hope, and a blessing as it was easy to guard. So they constructed a fort, stretching from cliff to cliff, with iron gates blocking the flow so that nothing large could enter or exit the valley through this waterway.   During the period of decay, at some point the valley is said to have faced a massive drought, some say to the point where the lake ran dry. While it is unlikely that the waterlevel went that low, the drought does appear plausible.   Several years later whatever blocked the rivers broke, unleashing massive spring floods that tore through everything near the water. Entire bridges and large amounts of trees were washed away and rammed through the basin fort, destroying it beyond repair and leading to its abandonment.
