Henry Character in Up&Down | World Anvil

Henry

A strange boy who grew up into a strange man. Efficient and thorough at everything he does, to a point where it's not always apparent to other people what exact purpose his actions serve.

Mind the gap (and your own business)

In a time where individual mobility has decreased to almost non-existence, with vehicles being challenging to acquire and maintain, travel being dangerous and barely viable, settlements still need supplies. A dedicated few are still keeping these supply lines running. Profit or even just gratitude aren't something they come by. The railways, nevertheless, seem determined to serve. So are the people who chose this path.   Of an already eccentric bunch, someone like Henry doesn't stand out too much. People think he's reliable, but not a people person at all. People say he's only concerned with freight. He doesn't say much at all. If something bothers him, he occasionally yells at it. At least that's what the most common assumption is, because getting him to speak to anyone about anything that isn't strictly related to his work, even in private, seems a nearly impossible task. It would also require being able to catch him off-duty at any moment - which appears to be, not only nearly, but completely impossible.

A Lovely View

Where to find him is pretty consistent. Every day, he's driving trains around the Southern Coasts. It would appear that he has every centimeter of track memorized. Some claim he doesn't really live anywhere outside of the shunting yards. He may have a family, but he doesn't ever talk about that stuff either. When exactly to find him isn't always predictable to outsiders, the rhythm of his life follows the schedules of his shifts. It's easy to get the impression that Henry is quickly upset by anything that interferes with the sacred books containing his schedules and orders, but he seems infinitely more patient when the trouble is caused by mechanical issues of the engines than he is when human error is involved.

Inseperable

His strange way of interacting with those machines often earns him alienated stares and gossip. He talks to them more than he talks to people, but somehow seems to understand their lack of words better than anything a human could tell him. It is well-known that he lost his leg to a gruesome accident involving one of the engines, yet instead of making him scared of them, it only seems to have strenghtened his fascination and infatuation with them. He considers that very engine his favorite ever since.
