Emanuel Character in Up&Down | World Anvil

Emanuel

(a.k.a. Manu)

Resident railboy working for the Usedom passenger train service. Cheeky and cheerful, but always on edge somehow.

A Stranger looking for Work

Despite not being born on the island, Manu has spent a large part of his life there. He arrived from RĂ¼gen when he started his training to become an employee of the local railway at the age of 15, grew up on Usedom with the locals, and felt right at home so he had no intention of leaving afterwards.   He finished his training as a mechanic and electrician, showing a good and intuitive grasp of the machinery he was tasked with fixing. At first, he would help the local switch keepers and station masters with their signal boxes and assist them with a variety of less specific tasks as well. Often he would also be called to help with fixing damaged powerlines or electric trains, in the process also learning how to drive them when it was needed.

Catching On

With his job he was getting around on the island quite a bit, and often would spend time in the city, where he was also housed by the railway. But during his time off, he enjoys staying at the farm of a good friend. They got to know each other when Manu was sent to do maintenance work on a nearby part of the railroad superstructures, and he kept returning often. Being a young man who lacked self-esteem and generally anxious, he felt a lot calmer and less stressed when he could spend time around the very down-to-earth farmers.

Following the Calling

Even if he tended to be more nervous than his colleagues felt was appropriate, Manu would nevertheless impress them with being competent at his job. When there was a need for fresh meat to replace train drivers who had become unfit for duty by getting injured, dying, or too old, he was offered to get a "promotion". He was reluctant at first, but was eventually convinced by his close friends to take the job - and he didn't regret the decision for one second.   He loves driving the railcars that transport passengers and some supplies as well between the island's important settlements. The income is good compared to other professions, which means that he can often get special snacks and gifts for the farmers' children whenever he stays at their place. People get along with him well because he's friendly and light-hearted, being decently respected even among his colleagues. Of course he's also always happy to play pranks or tease people, but only if he trusts them and knows they won't be mad.
