Grim Sustenance

It's Not Bad If You Ketchup It Up A Little

"When you're hungry enough, anything tastes good."
— Bargo Szan, Archaeomancy Graduate Student, Temple Observatory

There are spells that provide. There are spells that preserve. Grim Sustenance does neither. It does not create food, nor does it soften the experience of hunger. Its function is more limited and more severe. It alters the body just enough to accept what it would otherwise reject, allowing survival under conditions where nourishment is unavailable.

The spell does not change the substance being consumed. It does not transform inedible material into food, nor does it imbue it with nutritional value in any conventional sense. A piece of bark remains bark. Sand remains sand. Cloth remains cloth. The material retains its original properties, including taste, texture, and physical resistance. The spell does not make these things appealing or even tolerable in the usual sense. What it changes is the body’s response.

Under the effect of Grim Sustenance, the body no longer rejects these materials as it normally would. The processes that would cause immediate harm, obstruction, or expulsion are suppressed. The digestive system is forced into a state of acceptance, breaking down and deriving minimal sustenance from substances that would otherwise pass through unused or cause injury.

This acceptance is functional rather than natural. The act of consumption remains unpleasant. The taste is unchanged, often harsh or bitter. The texture remains resistant or abrasive. The physical act of eating does not become easier or more instinctive. The spell does not remove discomfort. It allows the process to occur without immediate failure. The result is not nourishment in the traditional sense. It is endurance.

The body receives enough to continue functioning, but not enough to recover or thrive. Energy is sustained at a minimal level. Strength is maintained only to the extent required for continued movement and action. The spell does not restore what has been lost through starvation. It prevents further decline from becoming immediately catastrophic.

Because of this, Grim Sustenance is most often used in situations where conventional food is unavailable and cannot be obtained within a reasonable timeframe. It is not a replacement for proper provisions. It is a measure taken when those provisions have failed.

Explorers traveling through unstable or unmapped regions rely on the spell when supply lines cannot be maintained. In environments where terrain shifts or access is restricted, carrying sufficient food is not always possible. The ability to extend survival using whatever materials are available can determine whether a journey continues or ends.

Couriers operating across long distances use the spell when delays or disruptions prevent resupply. In these roles, maintaining movement is often more critical than maintaining comfort. The spell allows them to continue their task even when conditions deteriorate.

Wardens stationed in isolated locations depend on it as a safeguard against interruption. When support cannot arrive and resources are limited, Grim Sustenance provides a method of sustaining basic function until conditions improve. In each of these cases, the spell is used not because it is desirable, but because it is reliable.

There is a cost associated with this form of adaptation, though it is not expressed as immediate injury. The body does not emerge from the process unchanged. Practitioners often report a lingering sense of discomfort after the spell ends. This discomfort is not localized pain or physical damage. It is a residual awareness of what the body was forced to accept.

The digestive system returns to its normal function, but the memory of the experience remains. Tastes that were endured rather than chosen may linger in the mind. The distinction between what is edible and what is not can feel less immediate. This effect is subtle, but it becomes more pronounced with repeated use.

Over time, individuals who rely on the spell frequently may develop altered habits. They may test the boundaries of what can be consumed even when the spell is not active. This behavior is not driven by necessity, but by a shifting perception of what is acceptable. The body itself does not support these actions without the spell, but the inclination to attempt them can persist.

This has led to concern among those who study long term effects. While the spell does not cause direct harm when used as intended, its repeated application can influence behavior in ways that are not immediately apparent. The line between survival and compulsion can become less distinct, particularly in individuals who have spent extended periods relying on the spell. As a result, its reputation varies depending on perspective.

Among those who prioritize practicality, Grim Sustenance is regarded as a necessary tool. It is no different in principle from other survival equipment. It provides a means of enduring conditions that would otherwise be fatal. Its limitations are understood, and its use is treated as a matter of circumstance rather than preference.

In more traditional or conservative circles, the spell is viewed with unease. The concern is not that it harms the body directly, but that it alters the relationship between the body and its needs. Eating is not only a biological process, but a structured and meaningful act. By forcing the body to accept what it would normally reject, the spell disrupts that structure in a way that some consider undesirable.

The origins of Grim Sustenance are difficult to establish with precision. Most references place its development in the early centuries following the collapse of reliable arcane infrastructure. During this period, travel became unpredictable, and supply chains failed with increasing frequency. The need for a method of sustaining life under uncertain conditions led to the development of spells that prioritized endurance over comfort.

Within that context, the purpose of Grim Sustenance is clear. It was not designed to improve quality of life. It was designed to prevent death when other options were no longer available. The spell does not offer a solution to hunger. It offers a way to delay its consequences.

Those who use it regularly do not treat it as an achievement or a demonstration of skill. It is not a spell that invites display or recognition. Its use is often private, carried out without attention or acknowledgment. The conditions that require it are not ones that invite observation.

When the effect ends, most practitioners return to conventional food as soon as it is available. This return is often immediate and deliberate. It reinforces the distinction between what was endured and what is normal. The act of eating proper food becomes a confirmation that the body has returned to its intended function. Even so, the experience is not entirely erased.

The knowledge that survival can be maintained under such conditions remains present. It becomes part of the individual’s understanding of their own limits and capabilities. In future situations where resources are uncertain, that knowledge influences decision making. Grim Sustenance does not change the nature of hunger. It changes how long it can be endured without resolution.

“I have eaten dust, bark, and the lining of my own pack. None of it filled me. None of it tasted good. All of it kept me moving. That was enough.”
— Jan Verdara, Pallas Recovery Corps.

2-level Transmutation

Ritual - does not require spell slot, takes 10 minutes longer
Casting Time: 1 minute
Range/Area: Self
Components: Verbal, Somatic
Duration: 8 hours
You warp your body’s digestive processes, allowing you to draw sustenance from lifeless matter.   For the duration, you can consume nonmagical, nonliving materials such as dirt, sand, wood, or cloth as though they were food. You can gain nourishment from such materials as if consuming a day’s ration, and suffer no ill effects from doing so.   The material tastes foul and provides no satisfaction, but doesn’t cause nausea or discomfort.   This spell doesn’t neutralize poison, disease, or magical effects present in consumed material. Toxic or inherently harmful substances affect you normally. The spell doesn’t allow you to consume materials that are physically impossible to ingest.
