Gallio Aurius Servanus

Citizens! Loyal Kinsmen! Children of our glorious and most prosperous Empire…. Heed the words of your dear friend Gallio Aurius Servanus and in them find wisdom and illumination.   Reader, I know many amongst you will have mourned the absence of my works over recent seasons and I feel it only fair to offer a suitable explanation. The truth is I found myself enveloped by a deep and enduring melancholy, one from which no pleasure, prayer or penance could offer an escape. You will know from my previous writings that this is clearly quite an unusual manner for one typically so jovial in nature as I.   I hope that none of you will ever be afflicted with such illness, for wine to taste like ash, to find no satisfaction in indulging ones urges. To find that the words that used to flow so freely simply cease to be. Gods forgive me I admit that I considered whether life was even worth continuing….   Of course you will be delighted to know that my condition clearly did improve but only by what I can understand to be divine intervention.   Observing the view over the Vertix Docks from my lodgings I had the sudden revelation of the sheer breadth of culture to be found across our blessed Empire. So many travellers, nomads, vagabonds, mercenaries and more; each with a story to tell, each unheard while the petty tales of nobility are catalogued for the ages. There must be so much wonder in their stories when they have seen so much of the world.   At once I made haste to the shrine of Mercury to offer tribute for this new inspiration and behold! What should I find but the words of our illustrious Governor and man of the people Pinarius Maximinus seeking aid to maintain peace and order. How could I possibly refuse?   Now of course you will realise by now I am no expert with blade or bow, and the arcane arts are something I have only a trivial grasp of. Yet we all, as citizens, have something to offer and there is always a need for those who’s words can sway the will of others.   So here then I find my new cause, my modus operandi and what I hope to be my magnum opus. Mercury willing I will find myself some worthy companions and the chronicles of our adventures will offer naught but riveting fascination.   No more collegia for me my friends, only the wonders to be seen beyond the horizon!
