Gwen’s Story

Gwen wants a to play a fast and graceful character, taking some inspiration from superheroes like Spider-Gwen.
  • She decides that her starting Approach should be Agile. She likes the image of her character performing feats of balance, agility, and acrobatics. The ability to avoid damage helps sell the choice to her. She could choose Might, but that does not interest her right now.
  • After some thought, Gwen likes the idea of tying in the spider motif more, but doesn’t want to be a Changeling, because she doesn’t see her character as part animal. Looking over the other ancestries, she decides on an Elf of the Kindari line who has a Spider Icon.
  • Webs are important to her vision, but she does not want to use magic, so Gwen settles on starting with Ranged Alchemy.
  • Since she needs to select a Path skill to use her Alchemy, another natural choice is to be Skilled in the Discipline of Poison because neither Disease nor Acid fit her vision. This costs her a standard milestone.
  • Because webs are important, Gwen decides that she needs to be a Master in the Discipline of Binding, spending three of her standard milestones on that.
  • She settles on the high concept of Araknari webweaver. This describes her specific ancestry and function as a minor emissary of her icon.
  • She decides to continue the theme and makes her Trouble- It’s all tied together somehow. This can be invoked in all types of situations, physical, social, or mental, emphasizing her tendency to see patterns in everything, constantly plan and favor the use of her alchemical webs.
  • Now that Gwen has more of her character defined, she likes the thought of delivering poisons with her blades, so she decides to add the Melee Alchemy Style, costing another milestone.
  • She decides that part of delivering poisons is toxins that will kill her enemies which is best represented by the Discipline of Damage, so she decides to increase her starting Skilled rank to Expert for an additional milestone.
Gwen takes a moment to take stock of her character as she stands now. She has spent 6 Standard Milestones on her choices but still has plenty more.
  • Does she want to be better at defending herself?
  • She might consider increasing her Agile Approach as it helps and adds other abilities like navigating obstacles.
  • She might decide to be better at the Discipline of Defense which helps protect her from attacks better and synergizes with the Discipline of Gifts, allowing her to grant effects with her Alchemy.
  • Other choices which seem thematically appropriate would be the Discipline of Survival, representing her skill in the wilds or even underurth.
  • Does she want to be capable of removing Alchemical effects through the Discipline of Dispel?
  • Does she want to further diversify into several Skilled effects or be able to create longer lasting alchemical effects through the Discipline of Craft- Alchemy skill, and if so, does she want to be able to harvest her own components for crafting?
  • Gwen considers the thought of premonitions and prophesy abilities, deciding to wait until later but thinks that would be a good idea for her Icon.
After some reflection, Gwen decides to take more inspiration from the superhero genre. She decides to think of her Alchemy as a utility belt or spider sack.
  • She chooses to add the Discipline of Crafting- Alchemy to her character at a Skilled level so she can make Skilled level effects.
  • Gwen does not like relying on others for her craft, so she chooses the Skilled level of the Discipline of Harvesting- Mystical to gather her own components and make her Alchemy more versatile.
  • To that end, she decides that the Discipline of Dispel is a good fit. Gwen chooses a Skilled level in it, spending a standard milestone.
  • Gwen thinks a bit about her options. She has a single milestone left and many more ideas. Does she want to be good at stealth, more agile, or more versatile? Eventually she decides that she sees her character as more Agile than any other the other choices and adds a rank of Agile to make it Expert level, spending her last milestone.
Gwen decides that her Icon will be a spirit of Time and Detection, lending to the idea of prescience and prophesy she wanted to incorporate later. She names the Icon ‘Longwidow’ envisioning it as the ancient mother who has seen her brood come to an end. Tying that into her character, Gwen decides that her character fears the loss of her family and friends. She feels that Longwidow came to her to help her prevent that loss but also fears that Longwidow sought her out because she knows they share a fate to come so Gwen alters the working on her High Concept to reflect that as an Arachnari Webwidow.   Her family and friends, both living and dead, will be an important part of her story. She decides that her mother joined the Imperial Guild of Assassins and has been pressuring her character to join as well. This inspires Gwen to view her Timeless Skill as a glimse into past, present, and other events dealing with the death. Gwen carefully considers spending a minor milestone to become and apprentice in the Assassin’s Guild. She considers joining the Imperial Guild of Foresters or even the Great Circle. Eventually she decided that she wants to be a member of the Great Circle and takes the Minstrel of Longwidow as her Faction Aspect. She decides to spend two of her minor milestones to gain the ability to Dispel Sickness and Dispel Plague because she wants to have be from an area that is infested with creatures that generate these effects like Filthcrawlers, Dreadwolves or Plagueweepers.
