Crafted

For ages, beings across the Urth have used skill, alchemy, and magic to infuse materials with life. Most are simple constructs, animated with limited purpose. Some are complex creations with some autonomy. Others surpass their creation, becoming sentient beings in their own right.
There are some who claim to build crafted intentionally, but none have been able to reliably imbue new sentience into their creations. Often, while intentional, such creations are one of a kind. No one understands why or how a crafted is born, but it is clear that they are no mere construct, no matter what their original form. Whatever process allows for the awakening of a crafted only seems to function on constructs made in the image of a mortal creature. The process imbues spirit to the materials, making them reactive to Healing magics. It also makes the material react to the passage of time much like any mortal creature, causing it to wear and break down over time.
No known communities of crafted exist, as such the crafted often adopt the culture and manners of their maker’s or adopted community. Some crafted bear the mannerisms and cultural affectations of old or even ancient peoples.
Crafted take many different forms. Most agree that the first Crafted took the form of sculptures, sometimes called Sculpted. These beings were formed of a variety of materials and by many different peoples. Some claim that they emerged fully formed from the very material of which they are made.
Other forms of Crafted emerged from armor, sometimes called Forged. The Wisps of the Fae Court of Conquest have a penchant for inhabiting suits of armor and many reports of Crafted are simply from those who mistook one of these Fae for something more. Some scholars claim that the Knights of the Silver Heart, who the House of the Healing Heart claim are the spirits of fallen knights who inhabit still the armor they wore in life, are in actuality Crafted. Some see these warriors as examples of successful creation though the Heart maintains that the Knights of the Silver Heart are heroes whose spirit lives on rather than created sentient golems.
Free willed constructs, golems and other magical bodies compose the last type of Crafted, sometimes called Made. More recent examples are automatons, creatures of gear and mechanisms. Their bodies are made of mechanisms, gears, and engines.
