Brewing and Cooking in The Magitech Chronicles | World Anvil

Brewing and Cooking

The tradition of good food and drink is old, very old. It has always been present with the Drifters. It is older than the Dragonflights. And was even present in the Great Cycle. It might be older than the Cycle itself. Ever present since a universe existed.   Many Drifters will tell you that all they ever needed was a good pint of beer and something homemade to eat. Some Ternus Marines I met swear on a good steak and something called Bourbon, some truly intoxicating stuff. And this ravishing girl from Reise couldn't stop talking about wanting to eat some Sauerkraut with me.   All in all, everyone, no matter if mortal, immortal or god, everyone loves good food.

Magical Food

Don't mistake me here, this isn't a cooking book. I am not talking about just any food here, but about magical food. Made from magical ingredients. This can be the classic healing beer, a counterspell potion, a cake that let's you breath fire like a hatchling, or a sausage giving you magic resistance.

Cooking & Brewing

The skills needed to produce magical food and beverages are Cooking and Brewing. Generally you need an appropriate material for the desired effect. For example you need life materials to have a healing effect.   The DT of the check is equal to the Magnitude of the Effect +1.     If you are creating at least 10 food/drinks at once then bonus successes may give you additional foods/drinks:   Over DT by 1: 1 More   Over DT by 2 or 3: 2 more   Over DT by 4 or 5 3 more   Over DT by 6 or more: 4 more

Recipes

To either cook or brew something, you need a Recipe. This is like a Schematic and needs to be bought or created before usage.   To create a Recipe you need to know the spell or fulfill the requirement for the effect you want to imbue into the Food/Drink. It takes the Magnitude of the effect x 8 in hours, with the DT equal to the Magnitude.     A Recipe usually lists the following things:
  • Name
  • Effect
  • Magnitude
  • Materials
  • Time

Effects

There is a true myriad of possibilities for food and drink effects. We have the classics like healing, counterspelling or spell pool restoration. Further there are more uncommon effects like magic resistance or invisibility. Generally most non-offensive spell effects can be turned turned into beer, sausages or whatever.   You'll find an ever growing list below.
Name Effect Base Magnitude Aspect Spell/Needs to be learned
Restoring Spellpool Restores 3 Spellpool 1 All Aspects Does not need to be learned
To be added

Magnitude, Materials and Cost

To achieve these effects a certain amount of materials needs to be used in making. The higher the magnitude the more material needs to be used, with diminishing returns.     Magnitude 1: 100 credits of material are worth 5 SP.   Mag 2: 100 credits are worth 4 SP.   Mag 3: 100 Credits are worth 3 SP.   Mag 4: 100 Credits are worth 2 SP.   Mag 5: 100 Credits are worth 1 SP.         Restoring Spellpool   Special rules apply to Spellpool restoration. These can be crafted at this cost with suitable magical materials from any aspect.   Magnitude 1: Restores 3 SP, requires 60 Credits of magical materials   Magnitude 2: Restores 6 SP, requires 170 Credits of magical materials   Magnitude 3: Restores 9 SP, requires 330 Credits of magical materials   Magnitude 4: Restores 12 SP, requires 540 Credits of magical materials   Magnitude 5: Restores 15 SP, requires 800 Credits of magical materials

Time

The time is determined by how long realistically it takes to make the Food/Drink if it would be non-magical.   Brewing beer only takes between 8 hours and a day, more if it needs to be stored for a certain amount of time. Wine will take months, if not years, but some foods could be prepared in under an hour.   GM's are encouraged to limit their player if these try to exploit these rules.

Consumption

Good Food and Drinks are objects of pleasure and should be used as such. However I'm not unfamiliar with the use of them during combat.   It takes one action to consume a magical drink and receive its effect. To eat some food and receive its effect takes two full actions.
