The Scions are those imbued with great power - typically from a higher being. Though Scions are typically those of celestials, Scions of devils, demons, the planes, and even nature itself can exist. However, a being or source of power can only ever have one Scion at a time. The plane-soul of Tempor is always the Scion of Tempor.

Appointment

Scions are generally chosen due to a deep connection to the power they are channelling. For sentient beings such as celestials and devils, this is a conscious choice in most cases. Children of the gods are, of course, favoured in the selection process, though are not always chosen. For inanimate sources of power such as nature, landmarks, or planes, the choice is almost entirely arbitrary and occurs by happenstance. Sometimes, the Scion does not even know that they are a Scion until well after they are chosen.

Duties

A Scion's duties typically align with the ideals and goals of their source of power, which greatly varies. For sources of planes or land, this generally involves protecting the land or the people living on it. For celestials, it often involves leading or holding a leadership-like position in their religion, as well as carrying out duties that the god themself cannot do and acting as the god's achor and vessel to the material plane. For devils, it often (but not always) involves making deals with mortals, though sometimes they play a similar role as a celestial's Scion. Scions of demons are known to be a wild card, their duties and personalities heavily varied and very dependent on the individual demon from whom they draw their power.

Benefits

A Scion, upon being chosen, will begin to siphon the energy of their source. This manifests as strange and unique powers tied directly to the god, plane, or otherwise that chose them. Scions of celestials often gain wings as one of their first traits, and the Scions of devils an immunity to extreme heat and fire. For those channeling nature or land, they may begin to gain abilities to manipulate the land around them, or communicate with animals and plants within it. Sometimes, though somewhat rarely, Scions are granted immortality - though this is tied to remaining in the favour of their source of power.

Grounds for Removal/Dismissal

A Scion is dismissed from their role either at death, when they lose their connection to their source, or if the sentient being granting them power no longer sees them as fit for the role. In some cases, a Scion has acted against their god and been removed from their position for the transgression. In others, a Scion simply was too far away from their source, and their connection was forever lost. When a Scion is dismissed, the effects are immediate and intense. The Scion loses their gained powers instantly, as well as (often) a part of themselves. Living former Scions often fall into a depression, or turn against their god entirely. None are unchanged after their experience, devoting their life to a person or a place yet losing it all in an instant.

I like the fact that devils can have scions too and it's not just celestials/gods. I can imagine some really interesting characters from that.
