The Ravencrown family is the ruling royal family of Mestrania. The family was founded when Hadthos had a succession crises - when the nation split to follow either the heir to the throne or the head of the church, and Mestrania was formed from those who supported the throne.
Since then, it has been the lineage of traditionally-human Ravencrowns that have led the nation of Mestrania. Recently, however, the bloodline has somewhat changed - with the most recent generation of Ravencrowns having been born half-human, hald-elf, up until approximately the year 1993, with the conclusion of the Mestranian War of Royal Claim.

Structure
The Ravencrown family has traditionally decided succession based on the eldest child. In the case that the oldest of the Ravencrown children is unable to be crowned, their oldest children then take priority, followed by their youngest, and then the next-oldest of their siblings. However, the current reigning member of the family is capable of naming whomever they wish to be their successor, so long as that person bears the Ravencrown name.
When marrying into the family, spouses do not take the name of Ravencrown. Similarly, when marrying out of the family, a Ravencrown will only take the name of their spouse if that spouse is a royal of their government and their traditions dictate it so. However, seeing as the majority of the continent no longer are ruled by monarchies, this no longer happens. As such, by Ravencrown tradition, no Ravencrown children should lose their surnames unless disowned. If they do choose to lose their surname regardless of this, it is likely that they would be disowned as a consequence.
