Sun Touched

“I've heard that those who are Sun Touched cover every inch of their body to hide their flesh not only from the sun but from wandering eyes.”

The Sun Touched refers to people who are afflicted with a disease that burns away the flesh. While there is no known cause of the disease, many believe that those who suffer from the disease have performed deeds that were deemed as an insult to the gods. As a result they were cursed to lose their flesh and live a life in constant and excruciating pain.
The disease affects the skin and when touched by sunlight the infected is faced with unbearable pain. Physicians have found that covering the skin with a soft fabric soaked in an ointment can prevent pain. Masks have been crafted for the more wealthy to cover their faces from the sun. Those of a lesser status cover their faces with simple cloth. The ointment used to soak the cloth is primarily made from Black Root, a plant known for its relivement of pain. To import this plant is costly as it is only known to grow on the rock faces of the Eperom Wall.

Guiscard the Holy

One of the most prominent figures who suffers from being Sun Touched is Guiscard the Holy. His ascendancy to godhood has cursed him with an extreme case of the disease. He is covered from head to toe in a soft white silk and his face is covered with a mask cast out of gold. Even while covered it's said he still feels the pain of the sun. Rumors have spread that he takes comfort only in the light of the moon.

The Red Emperor

Over the years rumors have spread that the males of the Himura Clan have been Sun Touched since they first accended to the Ember Throne. The first Red Emperor was said to have slain Suryo and feasted on his heart. For his crimes Dai'ba is said to have cursed his sons to never feel the light of the world ever again.
