Fortrente

Area

Fortrente is the most eastern Kingdom of Francalia. It sits squarely within the Les Tours Grises  mountain range.   The River Delange  and surrounding mountains constitute a natural barrier with the state of Haute-Besance . This mountain kingdom covers a huge amount of valleys and high plateaux. It also has managed to acquire and keep a huge chunk of the shore of the Lac Bleu  on its eastern side.   The shoreline on that side of the lake is very rugged but has been crucial in providing an outlet for the goods and products of the Kingdom.   In the south, its borders are with the Kingdoms of Lacan  and Alevins through the mountains. The River Leaudine draws the line between the three kingdoms.

Habitat

- Mountains High Valleys

The high valleys of the Tours Grises are one of the highest of Francalia. The high peaks slopes and valleys are a semi-wooded wilderness where few humans ventures, especially in the winter when the area is covered in ice and snow.   There are a few glaciers on the mountain which rarely melt even in summer.-

- Green Mountains and Sheltered Valleys

Further down to the west, the mountains are not as forbidding. This is where men have settled and have found mineral riches in the natural (or alien made) caves of the grey-stoned peaks.   The mountains are well known to be rich in all sorts of minerals including gems, gold, and silver. This is the main source of wealth for the Lords and Kings of Fortrente.   The artisans of Fortrente are not as fashionable as those of Malroque or Fortdun, but they will produce very hardwearing and beautiful swords and blades. Their traditional jewelry is often very heavy and showy, and not in fashion at the moment in the Francalian kingdoms' courts.   The Fortrente crofters will also herd long-haired goats for their prized wool. The wool is spun into fine, soft white cloths by the spinners of the lakeshore and then shipped to the merchant cities and ports of the coast, or carried down south to the rich capital cities of the southern kingdoms.-

- Rocky Hills and Northwestern Lakeshore

Much further down the mountains, to the northwest, are a series of rocky hills that stop abruptly into the Lac Bleu. The narrow valleys welcome more rural settlements.   Because of the milder climate in the sheltered valleys, people from Fortrente can grow a hardy type of white grape, as well as apples and hop. The area produces a lot of different alcohols much prized by the rest of Francalia. Beer, wine, and cider are one of the kingdom's biggest export and another important source of revenue.

- High-Level Plateau and Moorlands

South of the hills stretches an extensive plateau covered in moorlands which becomes marshy as the ground lowers down to the lakeshore in the west.   This long stretch of land is another great wilderness of Francalia. Not many farms can eke out a living out of the barren, cold, harsh landscape. A few homesteads will rear sheep for wool and meat. Lately, a growing industry in Eaufeu has brought new prosperity to the enterprising local lords.   The peaty waters of the moors are ideal to create great quality Eaufeu. After an initial investment in buying and bringing barley, the stream waters are diverted into distilleries to create a very popular smokey version of the amber drink. Once matured, the alcohol is sent back in barrels to the southern and western markets for a neat profit.
