Was Space a Good Idea?
Yesterday,
Lee Parker and
STN reminded us of 100 years of Human's expansion into Space. Indeed, as a fellow human, I am proud of our achievements; but lets not forget that these pass 100 years has not been all sunshine and rainbows.
Now, I am not trying to sour the grapes here, but there are a ton of issues that we face and many of which aren't being addressed, despite how 'our' government and corporate officials are claiming the contrary.
Reading the interview of
Saki Suzuki in yesterday's
article was, indeed, a treat. I have met Saki many times before, and it is always a pleasure speaking with her. However, even Saki admits that she is one of the luckier ones.
To this day, 1/12 children are born with a condition that affects their growth and their ability to withstand Earth's natural gravity, called
Earth Ache. Many children, and even adults, may suffer great discomfort when visiting our home planet. There are treatments for Earth Ache and the development of
Gravity Generators (which I will dive into more later) is promising to perhaps end this painful condition.
Another thing about reading the interview with Saki is she reminded us of the losses we had to endure during the
War of Humanity. 1.8 million people were lost in that war, with many more who died afterwards due to physical and mental illnesses. In fact, if you include those in the tally, 2.3 million is the total; from
both sides.
Not only this, but we are thrown into a perpetual Cold War between the
Nations of Earth Alliance and the
Mars Union; even though we are technically at 'peace'. One side can barely sneeze, without the other rushing to take up arms.
Since the formation of the NEA, Humans of Earth are experiencing for the first time in our history a Globalised Earth. On paper, and 'officially' our original nations still exist. However, they are all governed by the same centralised entity, the NEA Government. Any law they pass is trickled down to the planet; like a messiah issuing their commandments to their followers from above.
Orders such as the reformation of the Justice System, allowing the construction of Prisoner Workstations in the
Asteroid Belt (AB). Those who are found guilty of, pretty much, any law are shipped off to the AB and are required to work in hazardous conditions as they refine the ores and minerals for corperations to develop their high-tech products so they can make a profit.
I visited one of these Detention Centres, and I have shared my findingd in the article,
Justified Justice? Whilst at one of these centres, I learned that entire families are forced to work in dark, hot and smokey; sweat deck; space saunas, heated by flaming Furnaces. Heavy carts are pulled by whoever is able to, even children.
Yet, despite all of this,
STN reckons our first century was a great success. I'm not saying that it weren't, I am merely pointing out the facts.
I am hopeful, and perhaps one day we can finally unite as one species; and that maybe we can right our wrongs.
The future is promising, particularly with the advent of being able to manipulate Gravity. This is a remarkable achievement, though such power must be handled with great responsibility. This ability has not be granted to us without sacrifices either.
Its been 5 years since the
crushing of the Saharan research facility, and they are yet to undo the ball though perhaps it is for the best that it is not tampered with.
However, now that research into
Dark Crystals are relatively safer and many lessons have been learned, we are now installing
Gravity Generators onto many ships and stations across the Solar System.
As I said, I am hopeful and I am proud of us reaching such a tough milestone of 1 century off Earth. I am merely outlining, not just the problems of the day, but the lessons we must learn and what we do now shapes the future; our future.
