Kenning of Kayce

House Kenning of Kayce is a house of landed Knights from the westerlands. They blazon their arms with four sunbursts counterchanged on quartered orange and black.   Their words are "sunset to sunrise," possibly alluding to coming east from the Iron Islands and the Sunset Sea.

Culture

Traits

As a house of Firstmen descended from the Ironborn the Kennings are a dark haired serious looking people with strong angular features and dark eyes.

Customs

The Kennings have roots in fighting and fishing both and seem to take pride in their skill at either. Though no longer the best navigators or even great sailors, they are comfortable in the water and have a minor fleet of longships for defense of their bit of the Westerland coast.

History

Origins

House Kenning of Kayce was founded by Herrock Kenning, an ironborn warrior from House Kenning of Harlaw. During the decline of the driftwood kings of the ironborn, Herrock the Whoreson used his horn as a signal for the whores of Kayce to open a postern gate, allowing his men to take the town for House Lannister, the Kings of the Rock.   Herrock's warhorn, the Horn of Herrock, is passed down amongst the family as an heirloom.

Aegon's Conquest

While many other Westerland houses went East to the Field of Fire, house Kenning was among those who remained to keep an eye on the coast and repelled an ironborn assault during the Westerlands fight against Aegon the Conqueror. Kayce see's nearly twice as many attacks as Feastfires, presumably because the Kennings of Kayce are still to this day seen as traitors to the Ironborn.

Recent Events

In 48 AC Kayce was sacked, the town was burned and the people brutally savaged. The daughters of Ser Gorman were attacked in the castle, but the Ironborn were stopped from taking them. Lady Kenning however was taken to the Iron Islands and Ser Gorman Kenning was killed, his body taken away by the Ironborn. News has since reached Kayce that Lady Kenning lives as a thrall upon one of the islands.

Seat and Holdings

The castle and walled town of Kayce are located along the Sunset Sea on a peninsula south of Fair Isle and west of Casterly Rock. Feastfires is located nearby to the southwest.   The Castle and wall around the town are both rough constructions, hastily built but well maintained over the years and have proven to be enough for house Kenning. In 48 AC Kayce was sacked by the Ironborn and the town was burned. It has begun being rebuilt but is still in rough shape. The castle and wall however remain standing.
