Sand Crawlers are a native insect to the Karanchan Desert, they are bred for transportation, pulling cargo sleds and livestock due to their meat providing a good source of protein. Clan Terran breed the best Sand Crawlers, and they are often used for fighting and transport and never for livestock. Terran Sand Crawlers are the purebreds of Sand Crawlers.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Sand Crawlers stand roughly 6ft tall on all fours. They possses four legs used to move effectively through the sand, along with horns on the top and bottom of their head. A Sand Crawler typically has two horns, their primary use is for defense and attracting mates; the larger the horns the more attrictive they are to a mate. Females only possess small horns.  Sand Crawlers have a protective shell over the top of their body, along with a thick exoskelaton on the underside of their body. They have particualry strong legs despite the fact they look frail at a first glance, this allows them to move at speeds of up to 60km/h with no passanger and 50-55km/h with a rider. Their strength also makes them ideal for pulling cargo sleds across the sand.

Genetics and Reproduction

Sand Crawlers tend to mate around the month of Satimer, and their gestation period last around 45 days, ending in the month of Tmedere. They tend to lay between 5-10 eggs, with an average hatch rate of 60%.

Growth Rate & Stages

It takes roughly 14 months for newly hatched Sand Crawler to grow to full maturity. When born they don't possess a shell and rarely leave the protection offered by the heard. The entire heard look after the young, they are fed by regurgitated food from the adult Sand Crawlers until they reach 2 months and can eat properly for themselves.

Hot dry areas, they are native to the Karanchan Desert.

Dietary Needs and Habits

A Sand Crawlers main diet consists of Karra Brush a dry brush spread across the Karanchan desert, they are also known to eat the sap from the various desert succulents.

Biological Cycle

Sand Crawlers shed their shells every 4 years, where in which they take a month to regrow fully. Their shells are often used by Karanchan craftsmen due to their strength.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Sand Crawlers have good vision, along with a particualry good night vision. They are attracted to bright lights which is a common method for hearding them. They are deaf with a lack of ears but obtain a good sense of smell and can sense vibrations with the use of antena located by the mouth and on their feet.
