Silks

Silks is one of the Black Box Casino's many entertainment venues. It is known not only for its roomy ambience and hanging-silk decor, but also for the acrobats, dancers, and gymnasts who perform, often suspended in the air from silk or cords or while on a hanging platform.

Purpose / Function

When the Mad Cats need to conduct business face-to-face, it happens here.

There is a bar with comfortable seating, but the stools are angled to make viewing the stage difficult and uncomfortable. People rarely linger at the bar. Those who do, do so for specific reasons.

There is a hanging stage for entertainment, almost always some sort of silk acrobat, fan dancer, or rhythmic gymnast. These performers are usually accompanied by live music.

The club's most distinctive feature are the sheer silk panels that hang between the tables. These flutter and waft with every touch of moving air. A silken fog that softens light and sound alike, making it difficult to pick out the details of faces and words at the next table. They conceal, without truly hiding.

The Worldbuilder's Note

It's the prompt that gives me the starting-place here: a public front used by a criminal organization. That's a cultural prompt. Public vs. private, criminal vs. lawful...these are all determined by cultural cues.

In this case, because the Black Box is a casino's idea of what a casino should be, it leans into the entire casino vibe. The repeating motifs tend to be card-suit related, and grounded in the traditional elemental and emotional associations. This is all laid out in Ancient Arche Type.

It's established that restaurants are associated with Diamonds. But I want this to be a place that belongs to the secrecy of Spades. So this is a club, not a restaurant. Air, not earth; yellow and glass; shimmer, not glitter; tricks with lighting and scent.

Culture Drives Spacetime

I approach these problems from the perspective of renovating a home: I have a shape and volume of space that can be divided and sub-divided to suit any purpose. Accomplishing this means thinking about the purpose, defining it, and implementing choices to support it.

The spacing between the tables, the sheer silk panels. This provides privacy without relying on shadowy corners. It makes use of our elemental motif (air) and gives us pressure against the cold and intellectual tone of Spades. Spades are the razor that can cut through even drifting silk.
