Mausoleum Row in Shadar | World Anvil

Mausoleum Row

Because the towering city of Csillasgrad dates back to a time before The Breaking - it is one of the only modern settlements to have a substantial graveyard. Made in the fashion of the great cathedrals and church spires of the city itself, this took the form of a series of mausoleums and crypts stretching the full span of a city district. While during the Age of Darkness, this was a region of incredible danger due to the sheer number of Undead trapped within their graves and those who had managed to free themselves from their stone coffins - upon the cleansing of the Fractal and the establishment of cremation as common practice, this neighborhood of empty tombs became a ghost town.   While those with means would never choose to live in such a place, the sturdy structures and small stone buildings of these crypts made for suitable housing and property for those looking for any form of shelter. Over time, this district became known as Mausoleum Row.   Changing over time as the city of Csillasgrad grew around it, this neighborhood went from slums to a flourishing market and tavern street - where all manner of merchant stalls can be found between the granite mausoleums. The taverns built into the family tombs and underground crypts have drawn many to this area, such as the Dead Bard Tavern and the Empty Casket Bar. This is even the location of the guild hall for the Old Stone Society.
