The Hyenafolk are the most common Monsterfolk in the Northern Savannah, and can be found in small numbers elsewhere. Created, like most Monsterfolk, during the Magister War, they have adapted well to the modern era and can be found in packs of their own, or integrated into Orc, Elf, or Human communities.   There are three "subspecies" of Hyenafolk, roughly analogous to human ethnic groups, each with their own unique culture. However, the differences between them are largely cosmetic and cultural. These are the delicate seeming aardwolf, roughly human average brown, and robust appearing spotted tribes. All groups keep and breed regular hyenas as pets, hunting, and guard animals. With the reappearance of prehistoric hyenas, those have been added to their packs as well and greatly added to their chances of survival in the hostile wildernesses that Hyenafolk live in.

Basic Information

Anatomy & Morphology

Anthropomorphic Hyenas; they have generally human morphology, with plantigrade legs, regular arms, and a hyena-esque head (minor changes to allow for speach). They have a light layer of fur that broadly corresponds to the pattern of a common spotted, brown, or aardwolf hyena in colouration. Females of the spotted hyena lineage are prone to a condition that causes them to develop a pseudo-phallus. All Hyenafolk show sexual dimorphism, with females being larger than males by at least 10% on average.   Hyenafolk have a powerful bite, with even the smaller ones being able to splinter bone. They also have the digestive systems of scavengers, allowing them to eat many things that would poison or greatly harm others.

Biological Traits

Scavengers: Hyenafolk have the gastric systems of scavengers, and are immune to naturally occurring poisons, toxins, and bacteria from spoiled or rotted meats and other materials.   Bite: Their heads may have been altered somewhat to allow them speech, but Hyenafolk have retained their capacity to do serious damage with a bite. This has the following characteristics, and may be used instead of a weapon in combat:

Weapon/Wealth Level/Properties/Banes   Bite/0/Forceful, Precise/Persistent Damage   If the bane Persistent Damage is used, it reflects the Hyenafolk "locking" their jaws to crush the target, and becomes an ongoing action by the Hyenafolk doing it.

Genetics and Reproduction

Hyenafolk are genetically stable, and typically give birth to twins or triplets when they reproduce among themselves. Like many Monsterfolk created during the Magister War, they are capable of reproducing with other lineages, such as Humans, Orcs, Orosa, and Elves. The result in almost inevitably offspring with Hyenafolk features that otherwise follows the non-Hyenafolk morphology. Sages broadly agree this was by design by their creators.

Growth Rate & Stages

Hyenafolk reach physical maturity quickly, around 10 years of age, middle age is around 35, and few live beyond 60.

Ecology and Habitats

Hyenafolk prefer warm, dry climates, and are typically the apex scavengers in it and high on the predator list. Owing to their meat intake, those who have not joined a more sedentary community (where it can be purchased) will be migratory, following herds of large prey animals. The smaller aardwolf Hyenafolk are slightly different, preferring to prey on giant insects and to scavenge; they create seasonal migrations between giant insect hives.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Hyenafolk are scavengers are carnivores, with a preference for raw meat or meat that has been cooked to bloody rare or simply singed at best. Aardwolf Hyenafolk have mastered all manner of insect culinary skills.

Additional Information

Facial characteristics

Hyenafolk have a Hyena's head and face, albeit with a slightly shorter muzzle and slightly changed features to allow them to speak clearly.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Hyenafolk prefer warm and warm temperate areas, with savannah, grasslands, and light forests being their ideal areas. The largest population of them is in the Southern Continent.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Hyenafolk have keen hearing and a sharp sense of smell.

Symbiotic and Parasitic organisms

Hyenafolk have a close kinship and bond with regular hyenas and the primitive hyenas (like hyaenadon) that were pulled forwards through time during the lost age. They integrate them into their packs where they perform guard, hunting, and combat roles.

Civilization and Culture

Hyenafolk were created during the Magister War to feed the conflict's demand for blood. Their actual creator is unknown, but is believed to have been a Ranumbu Bio-Sage, from the now gone Ranumbu Empire that once shared the Southern Continent with the Iumbu Empire and Dakan Confederacy. A minor power in the conflict, the Ranumbu specialized in bio-manipulation magics, and are thought to have augmented themselves with non-human traits as part of their coming of age rituals. The Hyenafolk survived the conflict, the Lost Era, and have been flourishing in the modern day.

60 Years
Average Height
Height varies by subgroup of Hyenafolk, as some show more sexual dimorphism than others.   Spotted Hyenafolk: Males: 1.7m to 2m Females: 1.8m to 2.4m   Brown Hyenafolk: Males: 1.7m to 2m Females: 1.8m to 2.2m   Aardwolf Hyenafolk: Males: 1.4m to 1.8m Females: 1.6m to 2m
Average Weight
Height varies by subgroup of Hyenafolk, as some show more sexual dimorphism than others.   Spotted Hyenafolk: Males: 75kg to 120kg Females: 80kg to 140kg   Brown Hyenafolk: Males: 70kg to 100kg Females: 75kg to 120kg   Aardwolf Hyenafolk: Males: 60kg to 80kg Females: 70kg to 95kg
Average Physique
Males of all lineages tend to be lean and rangy, while females tend to be most muscular and robust.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Hyenafolk have a light coat of fur and a rough mane, and follow the colouration patterns of their parent hyena species. These are the Aarwolf, Brown, and Spotted hyenas.
