Welcome to Speroia

Like any Prime Material Plane, Speroia (or “The Sper,” to us old-timers) floats within a thin membrane which separates it from the rest of the infinite Multiverse. On the surface, Speroia seems like your standard, run-of-the-mill planet: some folks have more ambition than others, and not everyone gets along all the time, but most are just doing their best to get from one day to the next with as little trouble as possible. Those with a penchant for adventure will find magic here, and dragons (of course), and ancient treasures lying around in dangerous ruins guarded by creatures with their own agendas. But there's also plenty of regular honest work to be done, and for most folks, that's good enough.
Sometimes, though, things can get a little weird.
Throughout its history, this unassuming little chunk of reality has been pulled, pushed, smashed, squeezed, and twisted every which way by all the powerful forces fighting over it. It’s been broken apart and glued back together so many times—no wonder it’s sprung a few leaks, and the edges don’t quite fit together so tightly anymore.
These little cracks, they let things get through. Most of them just seep through to the edges of the Ethereal or Astral planes, allowing travelers to skip hundreds of miles of travel before spitting them back out through another crack in another place. If you know where these cracks are and how they’re connected, this is a mighty boon for anyone who doesn’t fancy trudging the roads or sailing the seas for weeks on end.
Some of these cracks, though, go elsewhere. You can’t always tell. They’re not always the same. And they don’t always stick around in the same places, either. Go through an unfamiliar portal, and you could maybe get where you wanted to go, or you might just get trapped on some random level of the Abyss. Is it worth the risk?
Most folks would say no. The majority of Speroians are perfectly content to keep their noses in their own business and their feet (or whatever) in their own plane, even when the unexpected—or the inexplicable—happens. Most people aren’t even aware of the extent of the situation. They just know that if you’re patient and don’t get all investigative, things will probably just go back to normal. But in certain circles, monitoring and mapping these portals (not to mention keeping them secret from competitors...or worse) is big business. Some travelers will pay a lot of money to get where they’re going quickly. Sometimes, too, they want to get to some pretty oddball places that don’t even exist in the Prime world.
And then there’s those who want to blow open some doors and bring...things...through from elsewhere. While this is generally frowned upon by anyone who wants to keep our world safe and familiar, there’s no accounting for others’ agendas.
We like our little planet, cracks and all, and we do what we can to hold it together.
  Take care of yourselves,
  Agnaveaux, the Slightly Tarnished
