Race

Humans, collectively known as Humanity, or scientifically as Homo sapiens, are a technologically advanced race that live within the Milky Way Galaxy. Since developing a drive capable of allowing interstellar travel, humanity has built up the Human Empire encompassing several hundred habitable worlds, discounting those controlled privately by megacorporations such as the Endos Interstellar Corporation.

History

Early Years

Humans evolved on the planet Earth in the Sol System. Human civilisation can be considered to have started with the Neolithetic Revolution, which occurred around 10,000 years ago, and marked the beginning of humans growing and consuming crops.   In time, humans came to develop sophisticated tools that allowed them to shape and manipulate the world around them, and combined with the security granted by systemic agriculture, began to develop settlements, towns, and other marks of civilisation. Populations and technological advancement rose rapidly through trade, spreading technological developments, and culminating in the creation of the first true civilisations.   Further technological advancement led to what is known as the Industrial Revolution, where humanity began to industrialise and automate many tasks, and create elaborate machinery. In the 1900s, humanity would see itself plunged into two large-scale wars within fifty years, that culminated in the creation of the atomic bomb and thus ascension into the Atomic Age. Further competition led to a period of history known as the "Cold War", an arms race between humanity's two leading superpowers, the United States of America and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (Abbreviated as the USSR). The competition between these two superpowers led to a race towards space exploration, culminating in the USSR sending a man into space for the first time in human history. Later, the United States would put a man on the moon, marking the first time a human had set foot on ground beyond Earth. The United Nations was created at this time.

Space Age

In the 20th and 21st centuries, humanity experienced a technological explosion, taking the civilisation into the Digital Age,and leading to the creation of many advanced technologies such as the modern computer. Humanity would later develop ships capable of interplanetary travel, and colonise Mars, though remained trapped within the Sol system.   In 2305, following decades of development, Humanity was able to construct it's first subspace drive, allowing faster-than-light travel, and thus the ability for the species to travel to other star systems. The first interstellar transit was performed by the UNNS Horizon and it's crew, and then backed up by the UNNS Vista. Together these two vessels would pave the way towards the colonisation of the world now known as Horizon, the first interstellar Human colony.   As Humanity began to explore and colonise space, forming the Human Empire, troubles and desires for independence arose amongst some distant colonies. Outbreaks of revolution forced a prompt response from Earth, culminating in the development of the United Nations into a governmental body. Whilst subservient and controlled by Earth's national governments, it in turn governed the rest of humanities colonies.   During their interstellar expansion, several megacorporations rose to prominence, such as the Endos Interstellar Corporation. These corporations would construct and operate entirely private fleets and armies, and with their own dystopian worlds in their possession, carved out chunks of the galaxy for themselves.   In the 2500s, Humanity discovered the existence of the Alteri Dominion, as well as several worlds that once fell within their empire. However, this discovery came at a cost. It was the megacorporations that first discovered Alteri worlds, leading to those megacorporations scoring a monopoly on Alteri worlds, technology, and records. Many of their technical and scientific breakthroughs still made it back to the rest of humanity, albeit through late-stage capitalism rather than goodwill, but the corporations kept much of their advances to themselves.

Modern Times

By the 2600s, Humanity has an empire of over one hundred habited worlds under the banner of the United Nations. Continued study into Alteri records and technology have led to another technological explosion for Humanity, greatly improving a whole variety of technologies such as medicines and subspace travel. The megacorporations have also continued to grow, as have their armies, fleets, and swathes of the galaxy that they control, becoming more and more dystopian for anyone unfortunate enough to be subservient to them. Not only have the corporations engaged in war with one another over disputes, technology, and Alteri worlds, but their power has become an issue for the United Nations due their ability to access control over then, and the disparity in military technology.

Basic Information

Anatomy & Morphology

Humans are bipedal, possessing two arms and two legs, and walk upright. Hands, fingers, and opposing thumbs allow humans to create and wield tools for a variety of purposes. They are warm-blooded and give birth to live young. As a result of evolution, humans are particular suited towards endurance and survivability.

Genetics and Reproduction

Humans reproduce sexually, requiring a single male and female member of the species. Gestation requires around nine months from conception to birth. Reproduction ends with one child in most cases, however twins, triplets, and even larger quantities still can be seen on some occasions. Modern medicine has been able to aid with the gestation and birth process, making both more comfortable and less risky. Furthermore, genetic manipulation of the foetus is possible, allowing genetic appearance traits to be modified, diseases to be cured, and to increase the likelihood of twins or greater.   Human reproduction ends when female members of the species undergo the menopause, signalling an end of fertility. This normally used to occur around the age of fifty years old, however modern medicine has allowed this age to be pushed back further.

Growth Rate & Stages

Upon birth, human babies need considerable care as they are completely unable to perform basic survival tasks, such as eating, without assistance. Babies quickly grow and develop the ability to talk and walk, and can begin speaking and becoming more independent before the age of six. Further develop continues through early years, particularly culminating in puberty, and development of areas such as the brain does not complete until around the mid-twenties.

Ecology and Habitats

Whilst being able to survive in a wide variety of temperatures, climates, and conditions, Humans prefer temperate environments that are not too hot, cold, or wet. Modern technology has allowed humans to terraform even the most inhospitable planets to suitable conditions, or failing that, build colony apparatus to create ideal living conditions.
