Project Proposal

Unit 7 Art and Design Project Proposal and Realisation
Title: Oli!

[ R E V I E W ]

My background knowledge in graphic design has become a solid foundation for me to build upon and develop my creative skill set. Throughout the duration of this course I have had the opportunity to explore and develop new techniques which has given me great confidence in experimenting with mixed media and using multiple creative processes in each project.

In one of my previous projects I really enjoyed developing mixed media techniques upon fired clay including the use of latex, papier-mâché and acrylic paint. It was fun to push the boundaries of a glazed ceramic form another step further and the final outcome turned out surprisingly well. This has inspired me to continue my exploration of unfamiliar techniques and mediums so that I can gain a better understanding of how well materials react and contrast with each other.

I enjoy a playful approach to new methods and would like to make the best use of the opportunities and resources available for this final major project. As this is the last project of the course, I would like to reflect back on my graphic design skills and incorporate my old skills with my new ones, particularly when it comes to advertising, presenting and showcasing my work. I feel that this will be a good pathway for me to continue with as a creative polymath when this course has concluded.

This year I have embarked on a creative side project in my spare time making a sci-fi setting called Oli!, set in 2718 with heavy oriental influences. I have been working very slowly on this project and showcasing it on the recently developed platform called World Anvil, where I have become a part of a huge creative community. Audience responses to my pixel art have been phenomenal and this is the first time that an audience has been so receptive to my work that they are asking for more.   For my final major project I would like to continue developing this setting and find a purpose for it. This creates a fantastic starting point for my primary research as I can ask people for their opinions on how they envisage my setting (such as web comics, graphic novels, games or toys), I can do this through feedback on the World Anvil site and through Discord internet-chat participation.   There is already a growing demand for a toy or model of an unbearably cute pet in my world which I would like to create by experimenting first with clay and later exploring resin casting. This would be a fantastic point of sale for my exhibition and could kickstart further interest in my work.   I have been producing pixel art throughout my work so far and will be doing some secondary research into other pixel artists such as Octavi Navarro. If I continue the exploration of resin casting further then I will also look into vinyl toy artists such as kidrobot and Gavin Strange for inspiration and to learn about their methods of making toys. This research will also look into the presentation and packaging of their work and how I might be able to showcase my final outcome(s) when exhibiting in Weston College’s Creative Arts Summer Show in June.

In order to continually evaluate this project I will be documenting my thoughts, processes, methods and research in a sketchbook. I also wish to generate further interest for the exhibition by promoting my work on social media such as Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, whilst also teasing behind-the-scenes photos of my production with the creative community on World Anvil. I will also be assessing my project with both my tutor and my peers to discuss and critique my progress.   Time management for this project will be essential so I have created a Gantt Chart to plan out every stage of my project, as production factors will need to be taken into consideration. I feel confident that I will be able to meet my timescales for this project and will be reflecting back upon both my sketchbook gantt chart to make sure that I’m on track.

This article is part of my Final Major Project!

This is the Project Proposal I submitted to the examination board for my Final Major Project (FMP) starting March 2018, ending June 2018.

Simply put, it is an outline of what I aim to achieve within the project and how I will go about doing it! The short bibliography at the end was requested in the criteria as material I have started to explore or intend to explore for this project.

If you would like to know more about any points mentioned in this proposal, feel free to ask in the comments or continue browsing this category as it will all be covered in separate articles later on!
