Zarithol

The whizzing of the black blade was clear in the air, chromatic energies pulsing around it. I smiled holding it in my hand. Its weight was significant, but balanced along the haft of the blade. There was almost a strange pulsing energy around the longsword, I knew the blade was enchanted, but the humming of the metal itself was enchanted more than even I expected.
Zarithol is an extremely rare metal found in Terlas. It is commonly used for its affinity for enchantment, leading to empowered armor and weapons.

Description

Zarithol naturally appears as either a jet black or deep grey ore embedded within stone. It commonly appears in bands of metal that lace through the stone.
When forged the metal has a chromatic flare, which seems to be linked to the metal's affinity for being enchanted. The metal doesn't decay as other metals do, seemingly resistant to both nautral and magical sources of decay. The metal most often has been used to make weapons and armor, though there have been attempts to use it in other forms that have been somewhat successful

History

The first ore of Zarithol was found in 594 AR in the City of Terlas. It took six years to mine out the large bands to get enough of the ore to attempt a refinement process. By 613 AR, the ruling class of the city learned how to harness the metal to make blades. The rulers of the city state chose to keep this informaiton a secret, using the blade and its unique properties to enhance their martial capabilities. Garneth Durrik took lead to mass produce weapons and magical items.
During the fall of Clan Durrik in 692 AR, Garneth attempted to destroy all evidence of how to find and refine Zarithol. They were unsuccessful in their attempt as several blacksmiths hid their knowledge to retain their own lives. Since its reclaimation, Terlas has become the reknown for their trade of Refined Zarithol.

Sourcing

Most of the known Zarithol has been found under the state of Terlas. The ores form as bands of the metal that appear throughout volcanic rocks. Each band contains a portion of the potential Zarithol, with the rest being comprised of the different layers that make up the additional bands of Zarithol.
There are three known locations that Zarithol has been found outside of Terlas. The first location is in Tokevis, where some Zarithol has been found around the base of Igneous Shard. The second was deep in the Rydovir Peaks, surrounding an ancient temple ruins dedicated to the Bastion of Law. The last location was in some of the stone peaks that scatter the Dolvalyn Wastes.
So far all of these additional locations have remained mostly unmined due to their politically, geographically, or religiously sensitive nature of each site. Occasionally, small deposits of Zarithol have been taken from these sites to check the purity of the ores.

I love that it is resistant to magical decay as well as natural decay. That is a useful attribute to have.
