Description

Appearance

Shardenok are small fungi that grow to about the size of a gold coin. In being so small, they often get lost in the middle of a dense forest floor, or damp cave. They seem to almost use other things as camoflague, resulting in them mostly appearing under other flora in the area, or between rocks in a cave.   When picked, their vibrant red caps dull slightly, becoming a burgundy color as they Shardenok is removed by the stem. This coloration reverts as the fungi is dried, its vibrant red appearing once again. When dried, the fungus becomes a mix of the darker and vibrant red, creating a strange swirling pattern.   Some people have learned to grow Shardenok artificially using magic. In doing so, the fungi doesn't lose any of its vibrant colours, instead developing a richer and deeper color that almost glows in dim lighting conditions.

Uses

Dishes

When dried and made into a powder, Shardenok becomes a sweet but smokey seasoning that can be added to any dish to add more flavors. However, in some regions of the world, there have been dishes that have been specifically designed to take on Shardenok as a part of its cooking. This section lists some of these dishes.

Klak'larna

A spiced meat dish, Klak'larna was first created in Ankh'eal as a combination of red meat and dried Shardenok. The meat is then cooked intensely, typically using a magical flame to help the meat cook evenly. While its still cooked, the centre of the meat is usually still pink with a bright red exterior.

Moreth Rice

Often served alongside a dairy product, Moreth Rice was designed as a challenge for those who like spicy food. It was the invention of a dairy merchant in Ulvrahill, a scheme to sell more of his dairy products. He used dried Shardenok to give the rice a sweeter flavor to coax people into thinking they can eat more. When people try to make Moreth Rice themselves, they find that they put too much cheese into the dish and not enough spice, this is because the merchant uses a Shardenok spiced cheese that seems to lessen the alleviation of the spice.

Quentarna

The most common dish using Shardenok, Quentarna takes the dried powder and applies it during the baking process for bread. These breads come across somewhat smonkey, but mostly sweet, with some people comparing it to Honey Rolls. In fact, some people have added honey into Quentarna to make a spiced honey roll that becomes a sweet but tamed flavour.

Tok-Tok Lavorre

Created by a group within the lands of the Ossaman Tribes, Tok-Tok Lavorre is made of a collection of fruits that are dusted with dried Shardenok, which brings out an additional sweetness in the fruit As trade has become more prominent between the tribes and other nations, the recipe for Tok-Tok Lavorre has expanded across the north of the Daunka Province.

Magical Component

Some magical casters are known to use different forms of Shardenok to enhance the state of their magic. Those who are linked with the natural world are known to use the Shardenok fungi to tint the colour of their magic towards a bright red that swirlds and changes hues with the rest of their casiing. Occasionally, they also crush the fungi into a paste, which can help to make natural healing more potent.   Arcane casters on the other hand are known to use dried Shardenok to help channel spells that are imbued with the elements. In doing so, there's an additional flair of the magic causing more elemental energy to surge forwards during the casting.
