Lyrin (ˈlaɪɹɪn)

The Lyrin are a group of individuals who reside on the Ember Isles. They have developed a nation and culture around their seafaring nature and island based culture.

History

The Lyrin are the primary descendents of those who survived Kyrul's attack on the island that once held the place of the shattered Ember Isles. Many of these people were religious sea-farers, however due to their situation resolved to stay on the isles as they seemed to be safer after The Shatter. During the darkest days of the culture, Ki'rao approached the people claiming to be an aspect of Roha. The Lyrin chose to worship Ki'rao and the culture flourished in the proceeding generations.   In 458 AR, the first of the Lyrin landed onto mainland Heimter. Kly'drov Kir'nokstron travelled to Locarik, from there teaching many people about the simple tribal life of the Lyrin people and their connection to the ocean through the Ember Isles.   The explorer Fridel Catral was able to learn much about the Lyrin people during 604 AR, however this ended in disaster as around 250 Lyrin were killed by Fridel Catral and his compatriates during a raid on a gold deposit and temple that was connected to the Lyrin. Many treasures of the people were stolen.

Notable Lyrin

  • Kly'drov Kir'nokstron - The first known Lyrin to travel to the mainland.

Naming

The Lyrin people use a matronymic system to determine the surname of their people. The surname of a Lyrin person denotes the mother of the child rather than a single family lineage. With a few exceptions, the mother's name is used in the genetive, followed by the suffxi of -stron (son), -ratra (daughter), -nisro (non-gender specific).

Dress

The Lyrin people wear a collection of traditional dress, often with bright colours to reflect the sun. Often the chieftans and village elders wear an orange or red belt around their outfit, this is often granted to the members of the culture through the traditional ritual Uru'kandra. Each of the Lyrin are given ceremonial tattoos during Krok'nor, this results in a unique and individualized feature to recognise each of the Lyrin.

Traditions

There are many traditional rituals of the Lyrin. Each have a specific significance to the life cycle of the Lyrin.
  • Kau'ni – The celebration of a birth for the Lyrin people, this specific ritual is in celebration of the dawning of the next Sun. All tribal members are to wear black during this event.
  • Krok'nor – The celebration of coming of age, this ritual is the most sacred as it confers adulthood onto the tribal members.
  • Yindro – The celebration of death for the Lyrin people, acts upon the setting of the next Sun. All tribal members are to wear white during this event.
  • Uru'kandra – The transferal to Elder and the appointment of a new leader. Each appointee is given a "divine challenge" by Ki'rao.
