Greek Pottery in History

You may have seen classical Greek pottery in a museum, either with black figures or with red and white figures on a black background, depicting figures from mythology. These pieces, aside from being useful, represent a creative medium of expression that developed over hundreds of years.   Red-figure pottery came into style around 530 BC. Black-figure pottery was in use somewhat earlier, but neither style would have been seen as far back as the Bronze Age, when this story is set.

Greek Pottery and Mythology

Some of these clay pieces were decorated with characters and events we recognize from mythology, but with details and stories that haven't reached us through any other source. They can provide new insights into the stories we know, and hints about stories that have otherwise been lost entirely!

Pottery in MiV

The red-figure water jar in Pyrrha's hands, spinning so that the painted figures seem to be chasing each other, out of control, presents the fragile state of Pyrrha's situation in that moment. I hope the aesthetics resonate, even though the jar itself is centuries out of place.
