Kain

(kayn) , is a Tragar Dwarf born in the Stronghold, the nearest and largest settlement to Sivaraus.

Kain is a psionic talent and a scout sent into the surrounding tunnels to find saphgar, a rare stone which appears like plain, grey rock to most eyes. He is stocky and strong like most male Dwarves, with grey-black skin; milky, blank eyes; a short, white beard; and a smooth, bald head.

Background

Kain grew up like all his male kin, working and competing for a defensible spot in a closed, slow-changing society. Those weaker than him worked under him and those stronger directed his own skills. As one of a quarter of his population born with the talent to move objects with the power of his will and link thoughts with another mind, he had privilege to direct the work of many who lacked his talents. However, he also risked his ambitions conflicting with another psion in Stronghold, always the greatest risk for any male psion born.

Tragar work in pods, family clans headed by the eldest two psions, usually two male but occasionally one male (Vungren) and one female (Tugren). The Grey Dwarves deny any central authority for none would acknowledge it. They exchange Tugren and laborers of both sexes between clans in exchange for tools, mines, and favors. The Tragar will not abide by a single leader or "elder mind" in either family or Stronghold, lest they slide down the path of the Ornilleth and lose their personal will to another.

Current

As a born Vungren, Kain was entitled to a Tugren mate with the same talent. However, there were no unbonded psionic females available to live and work beside for some time. When opportunity arose with the collapse of a mine belonging to another clan, and a Tugren of one of the workers was left alone outside and weeping, Kain abducted her, claiming her for his clan. His elder fathers agreed.

Lana was a hard worker but at first could not hide her dislike for Kain and her yearning for her first Vungren when they mind-mated. This led to many punishments for discipline. In time, her unfaithful thoughts came under control and he felt complete, even though she only opened one at a time: body, then mind.
