Flaugran Species in Misremembered Realms | World Anvil

Flaugran

The flaugran are an aquatic animal that are used by some of the sentient ocean dwelling peoples to aid them in manual labor. Though physically capable of great violence, they are gentle by nature when raised from hatchlings. They are small when they are born and grow slowly. When they are young and small they are raised in homes, similar to how many on the surface keep dogs. They form strong bonds with their adopted family and they have been known to recognize and show fondness for the children and grandchildren of the children they were raised along side when they themselves were young. They are raised around youths and help protect them from the dangers of the ocean. They are fiercely protective of their family, especially the youngest of them. They are also very intelligent creatures and are capable of helping with a wide array of tasks. They are slow to change and like to keep their home the same at all times. This means that they are great for helping to tidy a home as they will pick up messes and put things back to where they were if they're moved out of place. This also means that if a family decides to do something like rearrange furniture, or modify the house, they will keep putting things back the way they were before, and it can be difficult to impossible to change things without a lot of patience.
The larger ones are often used to help transport building supplies to which are too large or numerous to easily move by hand. Some will even help with placing materials like laying bricks if trained well.
Few of them are ever seen on the surface, and only once they have reached a size rivaling a small ship or larger. Because they are so rarely seen, few surface dwellers believe they exist other than sailors and scholars of ocean life. They sometimes follow a boat for a time, usually for an hour or so, but have been known to follow ships for days. It is considered a sign of extremely good fortune to have one following your boat, and good fortune to come.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

They have two large eyes on either side of their head that are well suited to the low lights in the depths of the sea. They have large tympanic membrane on either side of their shell, near what might be called a shoulder on a humanoid, that can detect sounds at long distances and can detect the direction and distance of the sound to some degree as well.
