Tarnishing

I've seen what Tarnishing does to a person, it isn't pretty. They don't last very long, and most societies will just put them down as an act of mercy.
— Angela Esther Lloyd, Ascendant Ahresi

Causes

The over-accumulation of mana waste in a person eventually leads to the gradual breakdown of magic, most easily observed in the cracking of foils.

For living beings, as everything has mana, there is a threshold as to how much mana waste they can absorb before the tarnishing process begins.

Symptoms

The first symptoms include discoloration upon parts of the body, turning a dull grey. The body parts that receive the most discoloration first are the channeling focal points for magic. Most often being the hands, fingertips, and arms.
The second symptom is the desaturation of colors within a person's mana colors. Ultimately affecting the individual's identity and their perception of the world around them.
The individual themselves will begin to physically see the colors of the world around them lose their lustre. Mana loses it's effectivness and magic becomes a lot less focused. Most color based effects diminish until coloration is lost.

Treatment

For early signs of mana-burn, usage of Foils as a waste conduit is highly recommended to purge the waste from the afflicted.
This can still be applied until Tarnishing has destroyed the mana within. The damage done via the tarnishing is permanent, and cannot be recovered by standard means.

Prognosis

Once tarnishing has taken further hold of the afflicted, physical and mental deterioration occur. All internal reserves of mana are weakend and discolored until left null and void. Mana no longer regenerates, and the intense craving for it increases hundred-fold. Leaving the individual a husk of their former self.   Once Tarnishing fully takes over, the soul is left in tattered remains, and the body ceases to function. At this stage, pray that Ascendant Ahresi puts the soul to rest.

Sequela

For any who do manage to contain Tarnishing or survive mana burn, the survivor gains a deep craving for foils and mana. A form of mana-withdrawal, where the afflicted will seek out sources of colored mana in order to gorge themselves. Hoping to feel some form of connection to it once more.
Depending on the severity of the Tarnished, this can range from simple longing, to life-crushing addiction and dependance on a feeling that will never return.

Prevention

In order to prevent buildup of mana waste, you can cleanse it from the body by transferring waste to a Foil.
So long as they are within the vicinity, e.g Pockets, in one's hand, or even in worn jewelery. The foil acts as a conduit for mana waste. Absorbing all waste until it exceeds capacity and cracks.
