Sanguine Institute | Aëdela | Lost Waves

Sanguine Institute

The institute is likely the foremost centre for medical studies on Ailion. It is a research hub for the study of medicine for all species of humanoids and those closely related to such. It also functions as a teaching facility, though the requirements for admission are high. To those who can afford it, or who suffer from interesting enough maladies, it also acts as a hospital.   There is a faculty of healing magic, but this isn't the primary focus of the Institute for Sanguine and Corporeal Studies as there are plenty of temples and magical academies that do that. Arcane and divine forces can only go so far as they provide little in terms of understanding their effects. Truly grasping the intricacies of bodies allows for much more advanced practices. It has also led to a greater understanding of how different humanoids develop and why some behaviours are more likely in some than in others.

Purpose / Function

Anyone with an extraordinary condition who can't be cured by regular healing magic or common healers would be lucky to be taken to the Institute. But the research done here is an even greater resource. No other place has an extensive library on everything from kobold anatomy to Weaveless Fever. Getting access can be a challenge, however.

Architecture

The Institute consists of four buildings. The largest, and original, one is u-shaped and decorated with marble. The second-largest lies at the centre of the courtyard, though mostly underground. It is often known as the Deep Red Halls and houses autopsy halls, research on cadavers, and the associated infrastructure. The third building is the clinic located behind the central building. This is where cases are evaluated, and most patients are treated, only moved to the central building if they are the subject of specific research. The final and smallest building is much more unassuming than the rest and located across the clinic. It's housing for the students and possibly guest researchers attending the Institute.   All the buildings are made from bright-coloured stone with floors and pillars made from marble in most places. There are statues and paintings of prominent professors throughout — especially in the central building. Some paintings are more similar to anatomical diagrams than pleasant scenes for the eyes to rest on.

History

The Institute for Sanguine and Corporeal Studies was founded in 1176 as medical researchers in the Republic of Aëdela gathered to share their knowledge. The group grew, and they eventually decided to build what is now the central building. At first, they didn't take in patients directly, but the wealthy patrons who paid for the construction and the livelihood of the professors soon demanded treatment of those closest to them. The clinic was added and then the Deep Red Halls, as they now had access to better research subjects.   There have been several controversies over the years in regards to the Institute. The desire for knowledge has led them to employ necromancy to investigate corpses or hold back spirits. They have used cadavers with more than dubious consent from the individual or their loved ones. And these acts are only a small part of the accusations that have been thrown their way. That said, the results of the studies are hard to argue with.
