Palanquin of the Yokai King

At first I heard matsuri sounds—the pounding of drums, the clanging of bells, shouting, and singing. But it wasn't time for the next festival.   When I turned around, the most exquisite palanquin approached, surrounded by utter pandemonium. The Night Parade of 100 Demons! I had to join in on the procession!

The Yokai King always travels in style. His personal palanquin, for travel throughout the Japan, is no exception. This ornate box with a central carrying pole at the top always catches onlookers' attention.   On the outside, gold-filigree inlay ornaments dark, lacquered wood. Transparent rice paper covers the viewing slots, allowing light inside while providing privacy for the occupant.   Inside, seasonal nature paintings on a gold background give off a cheery atmosphere. Handholds allow the rider to stay upright as the palanquin is hoisted onto the bearer's shoulders. A soft, coordinating silk cushion finishes the decor.

Properties

Beyond what you see, this traveling box is equipped with invisble spellwork along all exterior edges to provide the most modern amenities for this ancient transport style. The spells provide the following.
  • Ablility to expand to fit any number of guests. Extra bearers appear as needed.
  • Offsets jostling due to the nature of being carried by bearers.
  • Soundproofing so conversations and spoken spells remain private.
  • Transparent rice paper that acts as a one-way window.
  • Armor able to withstand modern weaponry.
  • Communication with the palace.
  • And much more!
  • Work in Progress

    Author's Notes

In my research, I couldn't find any description for the palanquin other than 'exquisite' and carried by either humans and/or yokai. So as usual, I'm happy to add in details where I can!

What a creative entry for the vehicle prompt! Are the palanquin bearers like the magical equivalent of AI or are they sentient beings that suddenly find themselves in the position of having to carry people around? (That would be unfortunate)

They are servants who pride themselves on their position. Chosen, but not unhappy. ;)
