Blood Moon Monster Myth in Jerna's Diary | World Anvil

Blood Moon Monster

During the night of a blood moon, a dangerous monster arises. Nobody knows where it comes from, why it exists, as no God would ever be evil enough to create an animal this horrific.
When a blood moon arises, lock your doors. Lock your windows. Make sure nothing can get in, and nobody can get out. Those who do leave the house, or leave a door open, are not alive by the time dawn breaks.
According to people who've seen this monster, blood runs down its face, past its glistening yellow teeth, sharper than the sharpest blade. Its burning red eyes can be seen from miles away, a sit races towards anything that makes a sound, slicing it into two with its sword-like talons.
So yeah, that's the story my mother told me. How lovely. Apparently, before us terani were nomads, we did in fact live in stationed houses and settlements. Then, we locked our doors, windows, and made sure we couldn't leave or nothing could get in on blood moons. This was thousands of years ago though, and now we don't do this. We literally can't now, as we abandoned our houses and wander Etrea.

Dragon?

I have reason to believe that the so-called blood moon monster is in fact just a very territorial dragon. You see, I've seen glimpses of a large animal, resembling a dragon but also matching the blood moon monster's description. I have spotted this dragon several times roaming the Blood Forest of Etrea, and after analysing its feeding patterns and senses I am almost certain I've found the blood moon monster. I don't know if this dragon belongs to a particular species, so I have just been calling it the blood dragon. Creative name, I know.
"It's coming! Lock your doors!" I sprinted to my door, slamming it shut. I reached for the wooden lock, sliding it into place. I took a deep breath and slumped onto my sofa. I hate these days... I thought, recalling every single time the blood moon monster showed up and forced our entire village into a panicked lockdown. As I closed my eyes, I heard a faint rattling outside. It was here. Shadows from the windows seeped inside, drenching my room into complete darkness. I held my breath as a menacing black figure stood outside my window, its red eyes glaring in. I couldn't help but look at my door, checking that it was locked. The blood moon monster caught on, and looked too. It tiptoed over, its tail waving about, rattling in the wind. The monster started scratching at the door, at the sides, the bottom, and eventually at the lock. It wedged its talon between the gap in the door, and slid the lock upwards in a matter of seconds. That's when the door creaked open, and the monster stared at me, and lunged.
