Aubento Language in Iphars | World Anvil

Aubento

Iphars is being reworked! Please bear with me!

Aubento is the old language of Naphilian, from when they all lived together and there were no ethnicities. Nowadays, it is only used by priests and non-priest people are prohibited to speak it, as it is believed to be a language of the gods.
Aubento was once the only language that the Naphilian speak, and it is now the parent of the Naphilian's languages. With the pass of time and the separation of the Naphilian that lead into the different ethnicities that now exist, the Aubento started to evolve to the new languages and its pure version started to be forgotten. Priests of the god of knowledge, who believe that the god gave them their ability to speak and thus it should be preserved, documented and preserved the old language. And thus the language, while with the peasants evolved to others, it stayed pure and safe with the priest, who taught and learned the languages from priest to priest.
Nowadays, the only ones speaking it are the priests, and it is used in religious ceremonies and temples. The priests, who are the leaders of most villagers, have forbidden the use of the Aubento to peasants and nobles that do not work as priests and it is not allowed to be taught it to non-priest people. Religious ceremonies happen in Aubento, without caring if the town people is able to understand it, as it is believed that they are not worth to speak the almost forgotten gift of the god of knowledge.
Peasants and nobles, unable to speak this language, are angry that they cannot learn the language of their main god and that they are constantly remainded that they are not worth to pray to their god correctly. Since some decades ago, the youngen are slowly skipping religious events, praying to their god in private with the little words they have managed to learn in Aubento from the repetitive priests monologes.
