Imperian Fleet

For the Glory of the Imperia

The Fleet employs twelve Legions to train, arm, and deploy the troops and support personnel that are needed to keep The Imperia functioning.

Generally, officers are of the patrician class, but they are occasionally equestrian class, who are enlisted plebeian soldiers who have worked their way up, such as is the case with the Primus Pilus.

Exclusively of the plebeian class, enlisted legionnaires begin at the bottom and work their way up. There are two exceptions to this: first, a lower-ranking equestrian family may enlist their child into the Principales ranks; and second, the venator immunes class is a required service for gemini.

Composition

Manpower

The Fleet is made of twelve legions, each of which contains ten cohorts. Cohorts are made of 6,001 professional soldiers, with the exception of Cohort I, which is a double-strength cohort at 12,000 professional soldiers. Every legion also has an auxiliary alae unit of 1,200 sagittarii pilots. This brings each legion's official count to 67,200 professional soldiers from the cohorts and alae.

Legionnaires are volunteer non-patrician troops. They serve as infantry who are eligible for advancement to become an immunis or one of the principales. An equestrian legionnaire could expect to quickly advance to the rank of centurion, whereas a plebeian legionnaire may advance to centurion after years of work and dedication.

Munifices are conscripts who were called involuntarily to complete their compulsory four-year term of military service. A munifex is strictly an infantry troop with no opportunity for advancement up the ranks.

Equipment

The standard legionnaire or munifex is provided three types of armor (space, ground, and cold weather), plus a pistol and rifle. Cohort VIII is where the bulk of the general immunes troops go, as every legion contains some of each immunis class. These immunes troops man the legion's defensive and offensive weaponry.

Every legion specializes in training a different immunis class, and whatever specialty equipment they need is housed on the legion ship.

Structure

One of the Fleet's greatest strengths is its highly-organized command structure. Every member of the Fleet knows both their primary duty and a secondary duty with deadly precision, and they know exactly where they're located in the chain of command. Legionnaires and above are regularly groomed for higher command, more responsibilities, and are exposed to stressful situations to test their ability to think on their feet.

Legio

A legio is made up of ten cohorts, nine of which number at 6,001 troops, and one of which is 12,000 troops strong, for a total of 66,009 troops. A legio is led by the Legatus Legionis. The Legatus is assisted by a Tribunus Laticlavius, a Praefectus Castrorum, and five Tribuni Angusticlavii.

In addition to the officers are support personnel. The Aquilifer is the ranking enlisted member aboard the legio and assists the Legatus with martial and civic duties. Each Tribunus Angusticlavius is assisted by a tesserarius. A legio's total ground troop number equals 66,023 troops, and it's total aerial troop number equals 1,200 troops, which means each legio contains 67,223 troops.

Legio Chain of Command

Legatus Legionis
The highest-ranking military member on a legion ship, the Legatus Legionis is also responsible for the welfare and politics of the civilian population aboard the ship, along with the Tribuni Angusticlavii.
Aquilifer
The Aquilifer is the highest enlisted rank on a legion ship and assists the Legatus with the daily operation of the legion troops and civilian affairs.

Tribunus Laticlavius
A legion's second-in-command, the Tribunus Laticlavius must be a patrician officer, rather than an equestrian who was commissioned.

Praefectus Alae
The Praefectus Alae is the legio's senior decurion equal in rank to the Praefectus Castrorum and is responsible for managing the legio's alae milliariae.
Praefectus Castrorum
The Praefectus Castrorum is chosen from the legion's most exemplary senior centurions, and is responsible for administrative tasks.

Tribunus Angusticlavius
There are five Tribuni Angusticlavii in a legion. A Tribunus Angusticlavius leads two cohorts and is chosen strictly from the equestrian class. Additionally, they perform civil duties that are divided among the separate decks of the legion ships.
Tesserarius
Every Tribunus Angusticlavius is assigned a tesserarius to assist them in their duties aboard the legion.

First Vexillatio

Second Vexillatio

Cohort I
Best of the Best
Cohort I is a double-strength cohort and is made up of the legion's best legionnaires plus immunes. Led by the Primus Pilus, the legion's ranking centurion.
Cohort II
New Troops
A legionnaire who proved themselves exceptional out of training will be assigned to Cohort II. The best of these legionnaires will go to Cohort VI, and then Cohort I.
Cohort III
Standard Troops
A legionnaire or munifex who has proven themselves competent will graduate out of Cohorts II or IV into Cohort III or Cohort V. A munifex may only advance as far as Cohorts III or V.
Cohort IV
New Troops
A legionnaire or munifex directly out of training in Cohort VII or Cohort IX will be assigned to Cohort IV. Exceptional legionnaires out of training may go to Cohort II, but munifices are strictly assigned to Cohort IV.

Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria in Cohort I is double strength at 2,000 troops per centuria, versus the 1,000 of a standard centuria. These are the legio's most experienced and elite troops, and are often the tip of the spear when a legio is called into battle. First Centuria is considered the apex of these elite troops.
Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria is led by an experienced centurion who has proven themselves to be competent with training of newer troops who nonetheless show exceptional promise as future members of Cohort I.
Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria of Cohort III is led by an experienced centurion who has proven themselves to be a competent leader, and who can successfully manage the munifices who may not be the most enthusiastic participants in the Fleet.
Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria of Cohort IV is led by an experienced centurion who has proven themselves to be competent with training of newer troops and successfully managing the munifices who may not be the most enthusiastic participants in the Fleet.

Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium in Cohort I is double strength at 180 troops per contubernium, versus the 90 of a standard contubernium. These are the legio's most experienced and elite troops, and are often the tip of the spear when a legio is called into battle. First Contubernium First Centuria are the most revered and feared legionnaires in the entire legio.
Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium is led by a legionnaire who is nearing graduation from Cohort II.
Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium of Cohort III is led by an experienced legionnaire who may be preparing to move into a more advanced Cohort.
Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium is led by a legionnaire or munifex who is nearing graduation from Cohort IV. This position is likely the furthest a munifex can advance as far as command is concerned.

Third Vexillatio

Fourth Vexillatio

Cohort V
Standard Troops
A legionnaire or munifex who has proven themselves competent will graduate out of Cohorts II or IV into Cohort III or Cohort V. A munifex may only advance as far as Cohorts III or V.
Cohort VI
Finest Troops
A legionnaire or immunis who has proven to be exceptional but not quite ready for Cohort I will graduate to Cohort VI, where they may improve and join Cohort I.
Cohort VII
Trainees
A brand new tironis will enter Cohort VII or Cohort IX. This is also where a discipulus attempting to become an immunis receives their training.
Cohort VIII
Selected Troops
Cohort VIII is the main cohort for the Legion's chosen immunes troops.

Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria of Cohort V is led by an experienced centurion who has proven themselves to be a competent leader, and who can successfully manage the munifices who may not be the most enthusiastic participants in the Fleet.

Each centuria of Cohort VI is led by an experienced centurion who has proven themselves to be competent with training of high-speed troops who show exceptional promise as future members of Cohort I.
Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria of Cohort VII is led by an experienced centurion with a demonstrated skill for training new troops, and who can successfully manage the munifices who may not be the most enthusiastic participants in the Fleet.
Centuries
First - Sixth
Each centuria of Cohort VIII is led by a centurion with the ability to manage the legio's immunes troop. Generally, these centurions are immunes themselves and can enhance the immunes' performance in their chosen roles. Unlike other centuries, First Centuria is not considered the most elite centuria; rather, these centuries are divided by immunes classes.

Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium of Cohort V is led by an experienced legionnaire who may be preparing to move into a more advanced Cohort.
Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium is led by an experienced legionnaire or immunis who is nearing advancement from Cohort VI into Cohort I.
Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium is led in a rotating schedule by a tironis or discipulus assigned to that contubernium, with intent to expose the tirones to their very first command experience, and to enhance the existing command ability of the discipuli.
Contubernium
First - Tenth
Each contubernium is led by an experienced immunis assigned to lead largely their own fellow immunes. While First Centuria is not considered the most advanced centuria, First Contubernium of each centuria is considered the most advanced.

Fifth Vexillatio

Cohort IX
Trainees
A brand new tironis will enter Cohort VII or Cohort IX. This is also where a discipulus attempting to become an immunis receives their training.
Cohort X
Good Troops
A legionnaire who has excelled beyond a standard troop but not all the way to Cohort VI will come to Cohort X.

Contubernia
First - Tenth
Each contubernium of Cohort X is led by an experienced legionnaire who may be preparing to move into a more advanced Cohort.

Vexillatio

Each cohort is paired with another and commanded by a Tribunus Angusticlavius, who is assisted by a tesserarius. Cohorts I and II are paired, Cohorts III and IV are paired, and so on.

Vexillationes can be used as detachments or auxillary forces if called upon. Each Tribunus Angusticlavius is capable of commanding independently of their Legatus, and a vexillatio is often preferred to an entire legio for smaller skirmishes.

First Vexillatio contains 18,001 troops plus the Tribunus Angusticlavius and tesserarius for a total of 18,003 troops. The other vexillationes contain 12,004 troops total.

Vexillatio Chain of Command

Tribunus Angusticlavius
The Tribunus Angusticlavius is strictly an equestrian position, which makes it a rare Senior Officer rank that can conceivably be achieved by someone born as a plebeian. In addition to martial duties, the Tirubunus Angusticlavius is also a civic leader who runs various decks of the legio and manages issues of the civilian population.

Tesserarius
A vexillatio's Tribunus Angusticlavius is assisted by a tesserarius. Technically designated as interrogators and troop liaisons, the tesserarii are also tasked as spies who report back to the Praetor, who is Caesar Immortalis's right hand and the Imperia's most senior and powerful tesserarius.

Stronger Cohort

Weaker Cohort

Pilus Prior
The Pilus Prior of the stronger cohort will assist and develop the Pilus Prior of the weaker cohort.

In Cohort I, this position is held by the Primus Pilus.
Pilus Prior
The Pilus Prior of the weaker cohort is intended to learn from the Pilus Prior of the stronger cohort, and may be promoted to a stronger cohort if they show sufficient growth as a leader.

In Cohort I, this position is held by a Primi Ordinis.

The two cohorts of a single vexillatio are never at equal skill, strength, or ability. A stronger cohort will be paired with a weaker cohort so that every vexillatio can use their stronger cohort to succeed in campaigns and also train and develop the weaker cohort.

Cohort

Most cohorts are made up of six centuries of 1,000 troops each. They are led by the centurion of the First Centuria; in Cohorts II-X this is the Pilus Prior, and in Cohort I this is the Primus Pilus. Each Pilus Prior has an Optio as their executive officer, for a total of 6,001 troops per Cohort II-X.

Cohort I is made of six centuries, but these are doubled in size in comparison to the other cohorts. Each centuria in Cohort I numbers 2,000 troops, for a total of 12,000 troops in Cohort I. The Primus Pilus does not have an Optio assigned.

All cohorts combined equal 66,009 troops, without considering the higher command including and above Tribunus Angusticlavius.

Cohort I Chain of Command

Primus Pilus
The highest-ranking centurion in a legion, the Primus Pilus commands Cohort I in its entirety secondary to the First Tribunus Angusticlavius, and also directly commands the First Centuria. Unlike the Tribunus Angusticlavius of Cohort I, the Primus Pilus is a purely martial role and has no involvement in governmental duties. There is no Optio assigned to the Primus Pilus.

Primi Ordinis
There are five Primi Ordines in Cohort I, each commanding 2nd-6th Centuries. These are senior centurions who have risen through the ranks of Cohort I and proven themselves exceptional at combat and strategy.

Centuria

Made up of ten contubernia of 90 legionnaires, munifices, and/or immunes, for a total of 900 troops. They are led by a centurion, who is assisted by the ten legionnaires who command the contubernia.

In addition to these 900 troops, there are also 90 medici, a centurion, five cornicenes, the centuria's signifer, and three frumentarii, for a total of 1,000 members of a centuria.

There are six centuries in a cohort, totalling 6,000 troops, which is boosted to 6,001 when the Optio is added at the cohort level.

Contubernium

Made up of 90 legionnaires, munifices, and/or immunes, the contubernium is the basic unit of the Fleet. They are led by the senior legionnaire in what is likely their first command role, and is appointed by the centurion of the centuria to which the contubernium belongs.

There are ten contubernia in a centuria for a total of 900 troops. A contubernium can be further broken down into nine units that are simply referred to by their number: One through Nine.

Contubernium Chain of Command

Legionnaire
The most senior legionnaire or immunis in the contubernium, appointed by the centurion. Very rarely can an outstanding munifex be promoted to this position, and in that case, is called Legionnaire as a title, not as a rank.

Primus Medicus
Every contubernium is assigned nine medici to support the troops within the contubernium. The primus medicus commands the corps, is the medic for One, and ensures all corps members maintain readiness and training.

During medical emergencies, this senior medicus assumes control of the contubernium until the emergency has been stabilized.

Ala Milliaria

A legio's air troops, chiefly made of sagittarii. The sagittarii act as scouts, aerial support, and pilots of landing equipment if the legio is ordered to go to ground on a planet or planetoid. The ala millitaria supports the cohorts but does not fall under them. The ala millitaria answers to the Legatus.

An ala milliaria is comprised of five alae, which are in turn made up of two turmae each, for a total of ten turmae. The total number of alae milliariae troops is 12,001: 1,200 pilots, and a single Optio Alae, a non-sagittarius who assists the Praefectus Alae with administrative duties and stands in their place if they are flying.

Ala
Made up of two turmae, mirroring how a vexillatio is made of two cohorts, totalling 240 sagittarii. The two decurions of the ala will switch adminsitrative duties back and forth so that one is not flying more or less than the other. This is done symbolically with a written schedule, but is functionally determined by a contest set forth by the two decurions, generally a race, a sparring match, or rochambeau.

Turma
The primary unit of the ala, a turma contains 120 sagittarii and is roughly equivalent to a cohort. Led by the decurion, the ranking sagittarius who is equal in rank to a centurion. There are ten turmae, and each one is assigned to support a specific cohort: Turma I supports Cohort I, Turma II supports Cohort II, and so on.

The decurion of Turma I acts as the Praefectus Alae, who holds equal rank to the Praefectus Castrorum.

Each turma, in addition to its 120 sagittarii, "borrows" up to 12 of the legio's architecti to act as aircraft maintainers and to oversee civilian contractors who work on the aircraft. These architecti do not count as true members of the turma, instead being loaned out from their cohort. They are managed by the Optio Alae.

Alae Milliariae Chain of Command

Praefectus Alae
Equal in rank to the Praefectus Castrorum, the Praefectus Alae is the ranking sagittarius in the ala. In addition to flying missions as the First Decurion, the Praefectus Alae attends all staff meetings that the Praefectus Castrorum would be expected to attend.

Optio Alae
The second-in-command of the ala, the Optio Alae performs executive officer duties secondary to the Praefectus Alae and is the only member of an ala who is not a sagittarius. The Optio Alae is expected to stand in the Praefectus Alae's place when the latter is unavailable, which tends to be often.

First Ala

Second Ala

Turma I
Best of the Best
An ala's most experienced and elite pilots, Turma I's pilots are exclusively fighter pilots who use the light and agile lancearius fighter. This Turma supports the First Vexillatio.
Turma II
New Troops
Sagittarii discipuli who prove themselves exceptional in training are assighed to Turma II. Turma II contains some fighter pilots, but largely these are troop movement pilots who fly the heavy clibanarius into active battles. This Turma supports the First Vexillatio.
Turma III
Standard Troops
Sagittarii of average ability who chiefly fly the conttarius spacebound fighter or the lightly armored troop movement cataphractius ship. This Turma supports the Second Vexillatio.
Turma IV
New Troops
New sagittarii out of training are assigned to Turma IV and fly only the troop movement crafts cataphractius and clibanarius while assigned here. This Turma supports the Second Vexillatio.

First Decurion
An ala's ranking sagittarius and the martial commander of its pilots, who also serves as the Praefectus Alae. The title decurion is reserved for use when this individual is flying, whereas Praefectus Alae is reserved for ground-based activities. Considered the ala's best lancearius pilot.
Second Decurion
The ala's second most experienced decurion and its best clibanarius pilot.
Third Decurion
The ala's sixth most experienced decurion and an excellent conttarius or cataphractius pilot.
Fourth Decurion
The ala's fourth most experienced decurion and an extremely skilled clibanarius or cataphractius pilot.

Turma VII
Trainees
The sagittarii discipuli of the legio are not assigned to Cohorts VII or IX, but rather go directly to Turmae VII or IX, where they fly a mix of all available aircraft and undergo the same rigorous leadership trials as the other immunes troops. They will attend didactic lectures in association with the trainee cohorts. This Turma supports the Fourth Vexillatio.
Turma VIII
Selected Troops
Sagittarii whose skill lies between the Good Troops of Turma X and the Finest Troops of Turma VI. The sagittarii in Turma VIII specialize in combat maneuvers in the troop transport crafts. This Turma supports the Fourth Vexillatio.

The ala's fifth most experienced decurion and a highly skilled conttarius or cataphractius pilot.
Sixth Decurion
The ala's third most experienced centurion and its best conttarius pilot.
Seventh Decurion
The ala's training commander, responsible for the education and training of new sagittarii, and experienced with flying every craft available to the sagittarii.
Eighth Decurion
This sagittarius has received additional training in battlefield strategy to be the best at directing troop landings and needs. Experienced with both the cataphractius and clibanarius, this decurion not only flies but directs troop landings in concert with the Tribuni Angusticlavii.

Fifth Ala

Turma IX
This Turma supports the Fifth Vexillatio.
Turma X
Good Troops
The sagittarii who excel beyond Standard Troops are assigned to Turma X, where they are tasked with flying whichever of the alae milliariae's aricraft is most needed in the current battle. They are expected to be skilled with all four. This Turma supports the Fifth Vexillatio.

Ninth Decurion
The ala's least experienced decurion who works closely with the Seventh Decurion to pursue education and training of trainee sagittarii as a sub-specialty.
Tenth Decurion
The ala's Jack-of-all-Trades sagittarius who is proficient with every aircraft and who is competent in managing the training of other sagittarii.
